FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

As some of you may have been aware I am currently on Long Service leave holidaying in Fiji. I will be returning to Musgrave Tuesday 15th May.

Cross Country

On Friday 27th April, Musgrave Hill students competed in our annual Cross Country event. What an amazing spectacular it was. To have our Fund Raising Partners CUA involved in the day just capped off what I believe has been our best Cross Country to date. This day is many weeks in the making and a big thank you must go to our PE teacher Katie Halsall for her organisation, passion and enthusiasm.

Without people like Katie and the backing of our wonderful staff and families it would just be a day where children run around a course. Not here at Musgrave, for us it is an opportunity to shine, participate, compete but most of all to have fun. A big thank you to our staff who assisted on the day, your efforts certainly assisted in the smooth running of the event. It was wonderful to see the huge support from our parents and families this year and for your cheering not only for your child but all the children who ran was greatly appreciated. I think the one thing that stands out the most for me was the number of students who participated on the day. Some may not be long distance runners but they gave it their all to help gain points for their sporting house. There were a lot of red faces, smiles and genuine excitement shown by our students and as always they conducted themselves well.

Individual Results and the overall House winner will be in the SPORTS TALK section further on in the newsletter.

Mother’s Day

It is my hope that this Sunday all our amazing Mothers, Grandmothers and Carers in our school community have a wonderful Mother’s day because every mum deserves to be spoilt rotten for the magnificent job they do each and every day.

NAPLAN

As mentioned in my previous newsletter, next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, students in Years 3 and 5 will take part in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests. The NAPLAN tests are a formal measure of how students are performing, however, it is important to remember that they are a point in time test and only one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process. I believe, that as a school, we have the balance right as far as our NAPLAN preparation goes.

We are proud to offer and support our Year 3 and 5 students with a substantial breakfast prior to sitting the NAPLAN tests. Having a full stomach and a clear mind will assist our students to do the best they can during these tests. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week all Year 3 and 5 students are invited to the School Hall Deck at 8am for breakfast. A letter was sent home this week to parents of students in these year levels outlining the process in more detail.

We expect that this year’s test results will be sent to our school around September, and an individual NAPLAN report for each student will be sent home around this time. These confidential reports will show your child’s results against key national information in each year level. Our school will use the information in a number of ways, primarily to better identify students requiring support and extension, and to identify strengths and improvement areas in our teaching programs.

CUA School Fundraiser

A HUGE thankyou to all who have signed onto our school fundraiser. This year students and families have really dug deep and I am proud to say that currently, we have raised $7,200 – ALL of which comes straight back into our school! A reminder that you still have time! Due to your fantastic efforts, our CUA fundraiser has extended the time until 18th May! So please, jump on and create your personal profile page. There will be a hover board given away to one of our students once fundraising has been finalised. To be eligible, you need to go to the website, create a personal profile and raise at least $10. It’s as easy as that!! Ordinarily, you would need to raise over $1000 to receive a hover board – so please jump on and start your profile ticking over!! If you do not have a fundraising pamphlet, please go to Sally in the tuckshop – there is still time!!

Upcoming Broadwater Trials

CLASSROOM CAPERS – PREP SILVER

In Prep Silver we have been doing some fantastic work with our VCOP strategies! The VCOP writing program involves using vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation to make our writing interesting and exciting. The students have used these strategies in their oral language and in their writing. We have been having a lot of fun in our VCOP sessions, practising our Kung Fu punctuation and celebrating our WOW WOW WOW words! Our writing is proudly displayed in the classroom, showcasing the fantastic work we have been doing down in Prep.
