Newsletter Articles

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Influenza, COVID and other winter bugs are making their way rapidly through the school community at the moment. If your child is unwell with any of these, they need to stay home to help us reduce the spread.

Report Card Time Again

Semester One Reports will be emailed in the final week of this term. To ensure that parents/carers receive their child’s report card, we need your family contact details to be accurate. Where students reside in two homes, it is important that all family members have the correct information listed, so both parents/carers will receive a report card via email. If you have updated or changed your email address recently, please ensure you notify the school.

Report Cards-: ‘C’ is something to celebrate!

I put this information in the newsletter every year around report card time because I believe it is important to share the following information with you to eliminate any confusion there may be surrounding the allocation of achievement. I encourage parents to pay particular attention to the effort grades for each subject and support their children to continually try their hardest at school.

The level of achievement your child receives in each area of their report is determined by how well they have achieved the required national standard, not on how well they have achieved compared to others in their class.

Achieving a ‘C means that a student has achieved the required standard for their year level as outlined in the Australian Curriculum-:

  • A "C" means that the student has met the criteria for a learner to be, at the appropriate year level.
  • A "C" means that the student is doing what is required at their Year Level at school. The best description is to say that a "C" means that the student's academic development is exactly where it is appropriate to be.
  • Attaining a "C" for Achievement means the student is ON TARGET for their age level.

A “C” should be celebrated with students because it means they have worked hard to be where they need to be. * The "Effort" grades are also important because they are a reflection of how, in the teacher’s opinion, the student is working consistently in class in that learning area.

Winter Uniform

With the cooler weather now upon us, I would like to provide a timely reminder that students should wear the school uniform, navy blue tracksuit pants and navy-blue jumper (available at leading retailers). Navy blue tights can be worn under shorts or skorts. School shoes are always full black. Wearing the correct school uniform is a core expectation for all students here at Musgrave. Being a part of this great learning community means maintaining the standards and image of our school, and our uniform plays a very important role in this. Please ensure that all items you purchase are in line with our uniform expectations. Please also ensure that all items of clothing, especially jumpers, which are usually removed as the day’s temperature warms up, are appropriately labelled so that lost clothes can be reunited with their owner. Please help us promote our school’s great reputation in the community by supporting our uniform policy.

WHAT’S HAPPENING

Ignite Junior Writer’s Festival 2023

Last Friday, sixteen aspiring authors from Years 5 and 6 attended the ‘Ignite 2023 Junior Writer’s Festival’ at Coombabah State High School. These students participated in an intensive, full day of creative workshops to help hone their writing skills. The theme of the day was ‘Ngullina Gaureima’ or ‘My Story’. They covered an incredible range of topics and were given practical tips from some amazing First Nations storytellers. We heard local stories, sang, danced and were inspired by the artists and their creative journeys. Our students represented Musgrave proudly, and many were awarded certificates for their teamwork, creativity and originality. They are now busily preparing a narrative to submit in a competition, and we’re so looking forward to reading their wonderful work when they’re done.

We are delighted to inform you that Musgrave Hill State School will be participating in the world-renowned ICAS competition in August this year.

What is ICAS?

ICAS is an online academic competition that is designed to assess students’ higher order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee and Digital Technologies.

Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student who participates will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals.

We encourage you to consider entering your child into ICAS this year.   There are three assessments available for students in years 3, 4, 5 & 6. Students do not need to complete all assessments – parents can choose which assessments from the list. The three assessments available are:

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 2 INDIGO

This term the Year 2 students studied nonfiction texts about sea creatures. They read many books about sharks, jellyfish, dolphins, octopuses and whales in guided reading sessions. It was lovely to see the students’ interest and enthusiasm escalate as they learnt many interesting facts. The excursion to Sea World was definitely the highlight of this term.
