FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Even though it sometimes still feels like we have only just returned to school and the year is still young, last Friday marked the mid-point of Term One. One-eighth of our school days are over for the year, highlighting the importance each and every day has in the learning journey of our students. Our teachers dedicate vast amounts of time, outside of their classroom contact hours, ensuring our school programs meet the needs of every student. If students miss class time, they miss vital learning time and are placed at a distinct disadvantage to their classmates. Research shows that students who have good patterns of attendance are more likely to achieve at school. Make 2023 the year that your child does not miss a day of school, unless absolutely necessary.
A positive culture is the key weapon of our school; invisible and yet so very powerful. Our students become an integral part of that culture, maintaining and nurturing it every day. How? It starts with those everyday things, like wearing our uniform with pride including black shoes and knowing we belong to a great school. It means getting involved in all the amazing opportunities, being on time and ready to learn, participating in our lunchtime clubs and competitions, there is always somewhere for everyone to shine at Musgrave. Mostly, that Musgrave culture materialises when each and every student makes the most of every lesson, every day.
Parking Around the School
Parents are reminded of the importance to show courtesy and consideration to our school neighbours when driving and parking around the school grounds. Please refrain from parking across driveways and footpaths. This is both dangerous to pedestrians and illegal.
The Queensland Police Service regulates motorist and pedestrian behaviour and has been alerted to our concerns for student safety and the rights of our neighbours at these busy times.
Pick Up Zone
The car park works both at Musgrave and Southport Special has been finalised today. Hopefully this will reduce some of the congestion during our afternoon pick up times.
To make the pick-up zone process safer and more efficient can I ask our families to ensure the following.
- Students must always use the passenger side doors to enter the car. NEVER the driver’s side as this means they have stepped out into the stream of passing traffic.
- Please remain in your cars at all times. Your child will be escorted to you.
- Drivers passing the line of parked cars in the pick-up line should not expect students to be on the road waiting or for a car door to suddenly open and expect students to come to them.
- Display your family name or child’s name on the passenger-side sun visor as shown below.
Driver co-operation is sincerely appreciated and student safety and overall efficiency will be further enhanced.
Raising Concerns and Working Toward Solutions
From time-to-time parents have concerns about their child or things happening at school. We encourage you to let us know of these concerns in an appropriate manner. Venting concerns on social media or complaining to other parents is not helpful and does little to work towards resolving any issues. It also sends a very poor message to children about how to resolve conflict.
A reminder that the following process should be followed if you have any concerns you wish to discuss.
- Make an appointment with the class teacher to discuss your concern. Trying to talk with them at drop off or pick up time makes it difficult as teachers are focused on settling the students and often have meetings to rush to after school. It is best to email the teacher and arrange a time that suits both the teacher and parent.
- If you have further concerns after raising it with the teacher, you are welcome to make an appointment to see the Deputy Principal who manages the sector as follows –

Major Works
This year there will be some exciting major works occurring within the school. Please know we have a multitude of plans currently being designed to ensure we minimize the disruptions to student learning, our staff and parents. When specifics have been finialised and the green light pressed, I will be able to provide more precise details to our school community. I will keep you posted.

WHAT’S HAPPENING
NAPLAN Online 2023
This year, NAPLAN Online will be taking place earlier than previous years, from 15th March- 27th March. Year 3 and Year 5 students will complete the NAPLAN Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy tests on laptops, excluding the Year 3 Writing test which will still be delivered using paper.
NAPLAN assessments provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for and students are not expected to do so. Students can see the types of questions and experience the types of skills both at school and home by visiting the link below:
https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/public-demonstration-site
Students can access various typing programs online to assist with their typing skills and navigation of keyboard. Two popular ones are:
Nitro Type
https://www.nitrotype.com/race
Tux Typing
https://qedu.sharepoint.com/sites/1678/mhssstudents/SitePages/Musgrave-Hill-State-School.aspx
Tux Typing install link can be found on the student sharepoint page.
