FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Welcome back to what is bound to be a very busy but exciting term for our school community as we head towards the conclusion of what will be a very successful year for our school and our students.
I hope you and your family enjoyed a wonderful holiday together. The children have settled back into school routines very quickly, they all look happy and relaxed after their holidays. They seemed to welcome the return to learning, meeting up with their friends and greeting their teachers with a smile.
NAPLAN 2022
Individual student reports for our Year 3 and 5 students who participated in the National Assessment of Literacy and Numeracy were sent home last week. As this was our first time completing the tests on-line we are extremely proud of how our students performed as a collective cohort and also their individual results which aligned well to their performance against the Australian Curriculum Standards.
2023 Enrolments-: Important
To ensure we have as accurate enrolment numbers as possible to start 2023, I will be sending home a letter in the next week or so requesting information about your child/ren’s schooling for 2023. Children who are returning to Musgrave Hill are just as important as those children who are not. If you are taking an extended holiday and will not be returning day 1 of the school year, that information is also important to ensure we keep a place for your child/ren. I understand we all have very busy lives but by taking just a couple of minutes to complete this form it will make such an incredible difference to ensuring a smooth start to 2023. I thank you in advance for your support in this matter. Please return completed forms to school office.
Parent Requests for 2023 Classes
Generating our class groupings within each year level is one of the most important tasks for our school to complete each year. We will be starting this process within the next month or so.
The Leadership Team, support staff and class teachers will work together to place students in a class for next year. Staff have deep knowledge of students, their needs and which students they should not be placed with for next year.
The aim is to construct well-balanced classes in which students can work and perform to their full potential. Due consideration is given to the student’s academic needs and their social/emotional needs when placement is decided. Your trust in our decision-making, your acknowledgement of the time and care that goes into this process and your respect for the competence and dedication of every member of our staff team are greatly appreciated.
Parents please read the attached information and if you would like to make a request please follow the process and guidelines.
Please note that the school will not enter into any discussions where parents request a teacher or a child to be excluded from an individual teacher’s class. All our teachers are professional and I have the greatest respect and confidence in the professional abilities of our entire teaching team. Any requests where a teacher’s name is mentioned, will unfortunately not be considered.
With Parental input (if you feel it necessary) combined with the school’s comprehensive internal placement processes, the allocation of pupils to classes for next year will be smooth and thoughtful, ensuring that the success of all students is maximised.
Please note that requests made in previous years are not always kept on file so it is important to make requests each year.
THE CUT OFF DATE FOR PARENT REQUESTS TO BE CONSIDERED IS FRIDAY 4th NOVEMBER 2023.

STEAM DAY
What a wonderful day!
In the last week of last term, Musgrave Hill had a brilliant day engaging in a total of 25 STEAM activities. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. Staff created the most engaging, challenging, inspiring activities for the students.
Here are the activities that were on offer:
The hype was contagious, the buzz invigorating and the excitement was felt by all involved. It was so wonderful to see older students supporting younger students and younger students learning from such fantastic older role models. Students and staff were raving about the fun they had and many wished we could do similar days EVERYDAY!
The final session of the day continued with a very exciting presentation from Griffith University’s Science on the Go team where the stage was covered with creeping dry ice smoke, incredibly mesmerising balloon science and then exploding bubbles that warranted loud screams from the audience.
Awards were also presented to the winners of the Math Challenge that ran for the duration of Term 3 and for the STEAM Competition winners who wowed the judges with their creations. All in all, it was such a fantastic day and we can’t wait to do it all again next year! Special thanks to Musgrave Hill SS P&C, the YMCA and Sam O’Connor MP for donating such generous prizes.
Congratulations to these students who were awarded prizes!

Here are some comments from students about our STEAM Day:
I loved working with different kids. I learnt a lot. Especially in the crime scene. It was great to have free choice of how to create things. I loved coding the Dashbots! My gingerbread man could float! I learnt that binary code is only using 0s and 1s. My raft floated and I didn’t think it would. It was so much fun! We learnt a lot! It was great getting to try new things that we don’t normally do. I liked working with students I didn’t know so well. I loved being challenged. I would like more STEAM days! Having older kids and younger kids was great because we had helpers. We liked moving to different classes. I learnt how the shape of a paper plane makes it fly. |
We were learning while playing. It was great to work together in teams and share roles and responsibilities. I loved designing and making things. We got to use equipment that we don’t normally have available to us. It was a fun and exciting to learn new things. I never knew I could do maths as well as I can. The challenges were hard but rewarding. Can we please do it again next year? Great to have the presentation from Griffith University! The teachers were so enthusiastic! Loved that we got to choose our activities. It was an awesome day! I liked working with new teachers. It was challenging and I had fun while learning. It was great to reconnect with old friends. Older kids were helping me. |
With such a successful day we have decided to add it to next years calendar! We cannot wait.

Crazy Colour Run
Thank you so much to everyone who supported our Crazy Colour Run. It was an amazing afternoon and I hope you all had a fabulous time. We were very lucky to reach our target of $25,000.00 on the morning of the event which enabled us to slime Ms McGuinness. Marcella from 3 Violet was the very lucky student who got to do the sliming as she was the highest fundraiser for the week.
Our overall fundraising amount was $27,058.94 which is so amazing.
Once again, I just want to say on behalf of the P&C “THANK YOU” so much.
It is now time to order your prizes on the app. If you are having any trouble please give me a call on 07 5644 5555 and I can help you.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 5 AQUA
In Term 4, the students in 5 Aqua are reading the classic Australian novel Storm Boy by Colin Thiele. They have also watched the 2019 film adaptation and are now hard at work creating a written comparison between the two versions of the story and stating their personal preference.
The students are enjoying learning about the themes of conservation and sustainability and the different social views and perspectives that come from a story that was written in 1964. To celebrate their study of these texts, 5 Aqua are also preparing for an upcoming assembly performance inspired by this much-loved children’s tale, where they will be in charge of script writing, set decoration, character design and stage direction.
