Staff Car Park
As of Monday, 8th of August there will be major works occurring within our staff car park. This work will continue throughout Term 3. The number of parks available to staff will be significantly impacted for both our school and Southport Special School. Only authorised cars will now be able to utilised the car park and those cars need to display the parking permit on their dashboard. The gates to the staff car park will be closed from 2.00pm until 3.00pm as a precautionary safety measure. This will also assist the flow of traffic in our pick-up zone.
For students and families who walk to school, entering/exiting via the path from the Kumbari crossing, it is important to please stay on the concrete path around the edge of the carpark and not to walk through the carpark.
Students who ride a bike or scooter to school must dismount prior to entering the school grounds. It is also important for all students who ride to wear a helmet.
School Opinion Surveys
Just a friendly reminder, the School Opinion Surveys for parents will close on 12 August 2022.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey has been emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 11 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it.
Prep Enrolments
While many things continue to be a little different in 2022, one thing that remains constant is our planning for our 2023 Prep Students. To help us with classes and numbers for next year, we ask that any families with 2023 Prep age students please return your completed enrolment paper work, including original birth certificate, to the office ASAP to secure your place.
Enrolling early not only allows us to plan our staffing and classes as accurately as possible, it also provides the opportunity for your 2023 Prep child to participate in our transition and information sessions which are extremely valuable in assisting with the transition into school.
Keeping Healthy
As we are now well and truly into the winter months, it is more important than ever that high hygiene protocols are followed to ensure that we can all stay as healthy as possible. If your child is showing signs or symptoms of a cold/flu or is feeling unwell please ensure to keep them at home to stop the spread of infection. Please notify the office of your child’s absence.

ENRICHMENT @ MUSGRAVE
This week a letter went home inviting all students from Prep to Year 6 to enter the STEAM Fair Competition. This competition will be a part of our STEAM Challenge Day on Wednesday 14th September. All entries will be on display, judged by our panel of experts and then winners will be announced in the last session on the day.
All entries into the STEAM Fair will need to be brought to school on Wednesday the 7th of September. They will need to be delivered to the Hall between 8:15 and 8:40am.
Students can select from one of the categories below:
Category A: EXPERIMENT |
Conduct an experiment to find the answer to a question/problem. The Scientific Method will take you through the correct process of asking a question, doing some preliminary research, making a hypothesis (your best guess at how it will turn out), planning & conducting your experiment, and analysing your results. |
Everyone is an innovator! Use science, technology, engineering, maths and creativity to dream up and design an object or a process to solve a real-life problem. The Design Process will take you through all the necessary steps: asking a question, brainstorming, planning, creating, testing, and making it even better. |
Category C: RESEARCH PROJECT |
Collect information about a STEAM topic or concept that you are personally interested in, and present your findings. You will look for existing answers/solutions by reading books, talking to experts, and gathering information from other sources such as schools and libraries. Your display board will have drawings, photographs, charts, graphs, dioramas, etc. Examples: How does a solar cell work? How does a light bulb operate? How do clouds form? What research exists on cloud formation? |
Each category will have specific task parameters that will need to be adhered to.
To register your interest and receive a STEAM Fair Competition Booklet please complete the form that was sent home this week and return it to your class teacher by Wednesday the 17th of August.
We can’t wait to see what is presented!

INDIGENOUS CHAMPION NEWS
Colours used in Aboriginal art ‘feat. Prep Purple, 5 Aqua’
Colours used for creating Aboriginal art, such as ochre or iron clay pigments, were originally obtained from the local land. Yellow, white, red, and black from charcoal was first produced and later smoky greys, sage greens and saltbush mauves were added. Although the Aboriginal people have used ochre for body paint, and to draw on bark, rock walls, in dirt and sand for many thousands of years, it was only in the 1930s that the first Aboriginal paintings were produced. The canvas artwork we see today is only about 50 years old.
Aboriginal dot paintings usually use ochre and acrylic paints, with acrylic paints commonly used in modern artworks. Blue tones are usually used to represent the ocean, and warm tones such as brown and orange are used to represent the earth. Prep Purple looked at different indigenous artists and had a go at dot painting the wedge tail eagle in flight, as a talented representation of the original custodians of the land where Musgrave Hill State School is located.

Many Indigenous cultures believe that Bunjil is the Ancestral Wedge-tailed Eagle who created the land features and animals of south-east Australia and gave its people life, by breathing into moulded clay figures. Bunjil symbolises respect, honour, strength, courage and wisdom.
Stencils of the hand have been noted as the earliest personalised symbols found on Aboriginal rock art sites. They were a means of marking territory and portraying a person’s individuality. They were (and still are) a way of recording that the Aboriginal person (or group of people) was at that specific place and time, when the hand print was created, similar to the way group photos are taken today.
5 Aqua created their individualised, pre-printed hand symbol using the predominant theme of the Aboriginal flag. The colours of the Aboriginal flag are black, red and yellow; with the black colour symbolising the Aboriginal people; the red colour representing the earth and the ceremonial significance of the colour of ochre; and the yellow circle representing the sun.
Some of our more enterprising 5 Aqua children interspersed the colours of the Torres Strait Islander flag within their poster. To the people of the Torres Strait Islands the green colour is a represention of the land; the black colour a represention of the people; the blue colour a representation of the sea; and the white colour a representation of peace.

5 Aqua additionally decided to KickstArt the 2022 NAIDOC theme of ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’ during our NAIDOC day celebrations. Part of the 2022 NAIDOC theme was to celebrate, honour and learn more about key moments and individuals who called for action to bring about systematic change for Aboriginal and Torres Islander communities. 5 Aqua took a creative approach to the 2022 NAIDOC theme and used artworks to produce a colourway design for footwear. This was their fashion statement!

At Musgrave Hill State School we believe that Aboriginal art has been predominant in reviving Aboriginal culture, by knocking down existing barriers of misunderstanding and prejudice. Aboriginal art has revitalised our appreciation and understanding of the Aboriginal culture, and has helped us build substantially stronger bridges of appreciation between people of all ages and cultures.

3 Violet
At the end of Term 1, 3 Violet studied Poetry. We looked at different poetic devices and also different types of poems. We enjoyed writing our own Cinquain poem about a thunderstorm. We also illustrated the use of Onomatopoeia in some art work.

This term, 3 Violet have been exploring cultural stories by learning about and reading Aboriginal Dreamtime Stories. Students have embraced learning about the meaning of the narratives, why they are important and what we can learn from them. Year 3 are looking forward to our upcoming excursion to Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre.
