FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Welcome Back

It is great to see all our students back, rested and ready for everything Term 3 has to offer, and what a perfect way to finish week 1 with our whole school Sports Day. The weather was perfect, the students were excited and it was terrific to see so many parents/carers in attendance.

COVID- Safe Practices

As we have heard recently, Qld is struggling under the fourth wave but as we have been doing throughout the entire pandemic, we will continue to have key safety measures in place across the whole school. However, it is a timely reminder to continue to stay 1.5m away from other people whenever possible and practicing good hygiene protocols. The wearing of face masks at this stage remains a personal decision for each individual and as a school we support whatever decision people choose to make.

I will continue to keep the community updated if anything changes.

School Opinion Surveys

The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.

An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 11 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.

Name Signs

To make the Pick-Up Zone operate more effectively can we ask that you have the name of your child/ren clearly and largely displayed on your dash. We are more than happy to make these signs up for you, just let the ladies in the office know you need a sign and we will get this to you ASAP.

Traffic Around the School

Unfortunately, as Principal, I have no jurisdiction over traffic around the school. My role is to encourage and engage with the school community to request parents are aware of and follow the road rules and school rules relating to driving, parking, drop off and pick-ups around the school.

Reminder of how the Drop off and Pick up Zone Operates-:

For this process to work efficiently and effectively we need everyone to do the right thing. The passenger pickup/drop off zone allows for quick pick up or drop off of children during congested peak school times.

Our staff are out the front to assist with a smooth transition through this area for all. I understand that this zone can be very frustrating at times but I ask that you please continue to respect the wonderful staff who are there simply to ensure the safety of our students.

How to use the Drop off and Pick up zone.

  • Vehicles move slowly along the loading zone towards the front of the queue
  • Your child/ren names should be displayed on your car dash
  • Children are called to the stairs
  • Children are then escorted to your stationary vehicle
  • Keep moving forward
  • Please don’t get out of your car
  • Motorists ‘give each other a fair go’
  • If your child is not there then you move to the front of the line and can stay there in your vehicle for a maximum of two minutes before you are required to move off and park or go around the block and re-enter the line.

The Staff Carpark

Please do not use the staff car parks for a pick up and drop off for your child. This is for staff only. It is also an unsupervised area and we have already had a couple of near misses the year. It is a narrow area. All foot traffic through the car park should be on the footpaths provided – not between the cars.

Amazing Achievement

Riyo Kawabata recently competed at the Qld and NSW State Titles for squash. Riyo dominated in her age division winning both State Titles. She did not drop a game in any of her matches which is an incredible feat. In September Ryio will complete in the Australian Junior Championship in Perth seeded number 1.

We here at Musgrave are all so proud of her and wish her all the best in the upcoming competitions.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Congratulations to all our amazing students who competed in our Athletics Carnival on Friday. Not only did we have sunshine and clear skies, it was a day full of colour, House spirit, fun and some very serious athletic competition.

Many people contributed to making the Athletics Carnival a successful event. Thank you to Paul Connolly for preparing the oval for the Carnival. Additionally, a big thank you to the staff who worked as officials and supervisors, the student helpers and the House Coordinators. With them, the carnival was able to run smoothly and efficiently.

A special mention to our House Captains who put on an entertaining performance in leading the House War Cries and march past in every attempt to be awarded House points.

After a full day of fierce competition and many scraped knees from desperate dives over the finish line, the event concluded with the following results.

March Past

Koala (Lead by their very own Koala mascot and all the athletes in flowing red capes.)

Congratulations again team! I look forward to working with you each Wednesday at morning tea.

Mathematics Challenge –
Mathematicians of Musgrave…this one is for you!

This term we are running weekly mathematics challenges for all students at Musgrave!!!

Students are encouraged to solve the weekly math problem/challenge that is released via Dojo and on our school Facebook page each Wednesday.

Students can work with their families to solve the problem and then need to record their answer on a blank piece of paper.

Their full name and class must also be added otherwise their entry will be invalid.

Students are to place their entry into the white/silver box in the front office by the following Wednesday.

Winners will be drawn each week and announced at Meet and Greet on Thursday morning.

STEAM Challenge Day

In week 10, the whole school will be participating in a STEAM Challenge Day.

This is a very exciting opportunity for our students to be challenged, inspired and enriched all while being engaged in activities that involve SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS & MATHS.

The buzz is already building amongst the teachers who are busily planning and organising their activities. Students will be able to make preferences for what they would like to participate in in the coming weeks. Watch this space … there’s more to come!

INDIGENOUS CHAMPION NEWS

Aboriginal Ochre Art

The Aboriginal people of Australia have used the ochre colour to create paintings dating back to ancient times. The ochre colour is a natural colour found in mud and charcoal. The Aboriginal people of Australia used these natural colours to illustrate Dreamtime stories, body painting, rock painting, and maps.

To the Aboriginal people, ochre has a religious significance and is used in art, rituals and healing ceremonies. Ochre is mud, coloured with hydrated iron oxide that can be ground to a powder using a mortar and pestle or scraped against a coarse stone. This powder can then be mixed with either water, salvia or egg white, to take on the consistency of a paint.

Ochre was of enormous value and was traded between different Aboriginal groups across Australia, in times past. The reason for this was because some places in Australia did not have a lot of ochre, but still needed to tell their stories and record pictures of the Dreamtime spirits. At times some Aboriginal tribes left warnings relating to dangers or instructions about the closest water hole, or the place where types of animal and fish could be caught.

All of these messages could only be transmitted using this naturally occurring colour. Had it not been for the use of ochre, Aboriginal art would have been limited to rock scratchings and carvings. Using ochre in paintings portrays to a large extent, Aboriginal art and culture in Australia.

Year 1

Our year one students decided to embrace the skill of ochre painting in the Art room and traced outlines of their hands using ochre. They then used the sticks collected from around the garden and made dot patterns using acrylic paint, to leave a hands-on legacy, on paper.

Aboriginal art has always focussed on story telling. It has always been used to deliver information relating to the land and beliefs of the Aboriginal people. The Aboriginal people used symbols as a way to write stories of cultural significance, to teach survival and to advise others of the best way to use the land.

Year 5

Our year 5 students decided to step up the art of ochre finesse in the Art room. They sought out broad, flat leaves (both dried and fresh) from the garden and used sticks to paint traditional Aboriginal symbols with ochre, to tell a story. The above pictures are delicately natural indications of the Year 5 student, stories.
