FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Welcome to Week 8 of Term 2. What a term it has been. There have been many staff absent due to illness resulting in changes to classroom teacher supervisions. The Musgrave students have been amazing adjusting to the changes and continuing their learning without missing a beat. Well done!
A reminder that any student with symptoms (e.g. runny nose, cough, headache, fever etc.) should stay at home - even if you think it is "just a cold". There have been several examples of students who test negative on a RAT at first, but go on to test positive later. If your child becomes ill at school you will be required to collect them.
Robotics Runner-Up Champions
Last Thursday, we had 17 amazing students compete in the Northern Districts Sumo Competition. They did a phenomenal job representing our school. We are so proud of their efforts and achievements. For full details on their wonderful achievements please read the article from teachers Dave Croucher and Nat Kent, included in the newsletter.
Report Cards
Student Report Cards for Semester 1, 2022 are currently under development as teachers and students finialise assessment tasks, ahead of intended distribution on Wednesday, 22 June. This is a perfect opportunity to remind all parents that a “C” is worth celebrating. I encourage parents to pay particular attention to the effort grades for each subject and support their children to continually try their hardest at school.
Mums and Dads/Carers sometimes feel disappointed if their child has one or more ‘C’s on their report card. This can be because they understand a ‘C’ to mean ‘average’. However, a ‘C’ does not mean average. A ‘C’ is something to celebrate! Achieving a ‘C means that a student has achieved the required standard for their year level as outlined in the Australian Curriculum.
Report Cards will be distributed electronically (via email) as this is more efficient and effective – while also having a significant impact in reducing the environmental footprint of our school.
To ensure that parents/carers receive their child’s report card, we need your family contact details to be accurate. Where students reside in two homes, it is important that all family members have the correct information listed, so both parents/carers will receive a report card via email.
Winter Uniform
With the cooler weather now upon us, I would like to provide a timely reminder that students should wear the school uniform, Navy Blue Tracksuit pants and Navy-blue jumper (available at leading retailers). Navy blue tights can be worn under shorts or skorts. School shoes should always be full black. Wearing the correct school uniform is a core expectation for all students here at Musgrave.
Being a part of this great learning community means maintaining the standards and image of our school, and our uniform plays a very important role in this. Please ensure that all items you purchase are in line with our uniform expectations. Please also ensure that all items of clothing, especially jumpers, which are usually removed as the day’s temperature warms up, are appropriately labelled so that lost clothes can be reunited with its owner. Please help us promote our school’s great reputation in the community by supporting our uniform policy.
Staff Car Park
Commencing over the June/July holidays there will be major works on our staff car park. This work will continue throughout Term 3. The number of parks available to staff will be significantly impacted. Over this year we have noticed parents utilising the staff carpark from time to time, so I ask that this practice please stop particularly now with the major works occurring. I appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

WHAT’S HAPPENING
PJ Friday

On the last day of Week 9 (Friday 17th June) we are holding ‘PJ Friday’ to celebrate the end of another fantastic term here at Musgrave. Everyone can wear their favourite comfy pyjamas, throw on a dressing gown and even bring slippers or bed socks to wear indoors. Students must still wear sneakers or protective shoes and a hat while outside the class room.
The P&C will be screening a PG movie in the hall in two separate sessions (one each for juniors and seniors), to give everyone a chance to relax with their friends. Students may bring a named cushion or pillow to snuggle during the movie, but they must be responsible for it. We will also supply every student with a small bag of popcorn to enjoy throughout the movie.
We are asking for a small donation to help support the wonderful work of the Musgrave Hill P&C. You can make this donation on the QKR! App any time before PJ Day.

OUR STUDENT LEADERS
House Captains
Our 2022 House Captains have started a community partnership with our neighbouring primary schools and Southport State High. They have ensured they will leave their legacy at Musgrave Hill by co-creating new war cries for their houses.
We spent an afternoon with Labrador, Southport Primary and Southport High House Captains to co-create a new war cry for our houses. The teams worked collaboratively to create the new war cries for their house and also came up with a little routine to go with them.
Our House Captains had the opportunity on Friday to then teach their fellow house members the new war cries ready for Athletics Carnival.
Our House Captains have done a fantastic job in creating an original and authentic war cry for their house that will remain at Musgrave for years to come.
Wave Break Island Clean-up
Earlier this year, our Environmental Leader, Jai, and our Student Council Captain, Nyah, were invited to help clean up Wave Break Island as a part of Sam O’Connor’s Clean Up Australia Day. Unfortunately, the event had to be postponed due to bad weather.
To observe World Ocean’s Day, Sam O’Connor rescheduled the Wave Break Island clean-up for Sunday, 5 June.
Jai and Nyah did a fabulous job representing Musgrave Hill SS at the event. They met Sam and other schools’ leaders at the Broadwater for a safety briefing before setting off on kayaks to Wave Break Island. They paddled over to the island, where they collected rubbish from around the island, and then they paddled back to the main land.
We thank Jai, Nyah and Sam for making our ocean a cleaner and safer place to be for ourselves and our marine life.

TEAM MUSGRAVE ROBOT SUMO
Last Thursday Musgrave Hill competed for the first time in the Northern District Robot Sumo Competition. Seven schools across the district were involved and this included a number of secondary school students. The objective of this competition was to build a fully autonomous robot and program it to push the opposing robot out of the arena.
Our amazing group of 17 students that competed on the day had spent countless lunchtimes engineering their robots and testing their code. We had quite a few rebuilds and many of our teams were still putting finishing touches on their robots the day before we were to compete. Having never experienced this form of competition before, most of the students were very nervous about competing against more experienced schools that have been involved in robotics for a number of years.

As the students entered the hall and saw the competition arena, the excitement kicked in. Nothing would prepare them for the intensity of robot sumo. Sumo arenas filled the Coombabah High School hall and there were some very intimidating robots. In the words of Mr Bird, “It is like David and Goliath”.

After overcoming some technical coding issues with light reflection and robots deciding to go in the opposite direction than desired, we began to win some matches. Of the many highlights in the day, our grade 4 contingent of Tate, Faith and Theo successfully won a match over a more experienced grade 7 team.
After three different rounds of countless matches, some robot repairs and some sore fingers from pressing the ‘go’ button on the robots, Musgrave waited in anticipation while they announced the Finals. Two of our Musgrave teams had made it. Team Isla and Kelsey were announced, followed by team Xavi, Jhayden, Lorfield and Arthur. Despite a gallant effort, our Musgrave team of Pippa, Lisa and Kiira narrowly missed out on the finals by one spot.
As the finals heated up and the intensity built, the little robot with the lucky bracelet belonging to Isla and Kelsey kept winning against much larger opponents. Before we knew it, they were competing for a spot in the Grand Final. Isla and Kelsey’s semi final match involved many restarts as both robots, despite a huge size difference, appeared very evenly matched. Both robots were locked together in what looked to be an infinite battle until somewhere from deep inside it’s pink and pastel blue exterior, the robot of Kelsey and Isla gave one last push and drove its opponent out of the sumo ring. We had made the Grand Final.
Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in the Grand Final, but there are some very excited young engineers at Musgrave Hill eagerly awaiting their next shot at the title. Thank you to the parents that were able to come and see their children compete and the amazing sportsmanship from all the Musgrave Hill teams.
We definitely will be back next year.
3, 2, 1 SUMO!

Yours in Robotics,
David Croucher and Natalie Kent
YEAR 3 HASS
In HASS this semester, Year 3 students have been identifying the importance of different celebrations and commemorations throughout the world. We have loved learning about how and why people participate in and contribute to their communities. We have made some clever, creative pieces of art, as we explore each celebration and commemoration.
We made mosaic shamrocks, which are a common symbol of Saint Patrick’s Day.
We constructed colourful kites when we learnt about the Basant Kite Festival. Kites signify the fun and freedom that comes with the warmer spring weather. The yellow tails on our kites represent the yellow Mustard Flower, which blossoms in the Punjab region during the season of Spring.
We made lanterns for Chinese New Year, with etched designs. We also added some red to our lanterns because the colour red is very lucky to Chinese people, as it symbolises fortune, good luck and joy.
We created ANZAC poppies using different paper techniques. The red poppy is the emblem of remembrance. We wear the red poppy in memory of our soldiers who laid down their lives in Flanders’ Fields during World War I.
Our classes have made a Korowai (cloak), for Waitangi Day. Korowai are treasures that are often worn on special occasions.
The Year 3 classes are currently conducting our own research into a chosen celebration or commemoration and are creating a poster to finish off the unit. We are looking forward to sharing our posters with a small group of peers as we put our speaking skills into practise.

TUCKSHOP NEWS
All orders need to be placed via the Qkr! App by 9.00am each day. You can also use the ‘Musgrave Way Award’ by simply attaching the $5.00 award to a note with your order. Please make sure your child lets their teacher know or remind them to drop it off to me in the tuckshop when they arrive at school.
I would like to thank everyone for the understanding during this term. We have had many supply issues where we couldn’t have our normal menu items available due to stock shortages through our distributor. I have been working closely with our distributor to come up with alternatives. Currently we are having trouble with our packaging and have been placed on order restrictions due to the high demand. Hopefully like everything this else this year it will calm down soon. So, I do appreciate your understanding.
We have some new ice creams available to purchase on Qkr! and at the lunch breaks. We have chocolate and rainbow Paddlepops for $2.50. Please keep an eye out for any specials on your Qkr! App.
If your child is missing a container can you please send them up to the tuckshop to look through our lost property as I have quite a few containers with no names. The Lost and Found is located just outside the tuckshop next to the senior girls toilet.
If you have any enquiries at all please don’t hesitate to give me a call 5644 5555
Uniform News
Once again thank you very much for your understanding in regards to the delay in our stock arriving. We’ve had a few hiccups along the way with Covid restrictions, truck strikes, flooding and a few public holidays thrown in as well. As soon as the stock arrives all backorders will be sent out and stock levels will be updated via the Qkr! App. If you have any queries please give me a call on 5644 5555 and use the Tuckshop/Uniform extension.
We have changed our operating hours for the Uniform Shop to allow parents to be able to come in. We will be open the following days and times:
Monday |
1:30-2:50pm |
Tuesday |
1:30-2:50pm |
Wednesday |
1:30-2:50pm |
If you do require an appointment outside of these times please call the Uniform Shop so we can try to accommodate this.
Winter Uniform
We are currently in communication with a couple of uniform suppliers sourcing the best replacement for our jackets. We are very confident we will have it all sorted well before Winter 2023 and have plenty of stock ready. If you have a backordered jacket that you have not received, can you please call the Uniform Shop.
We have a very limited amount of jackets left. If you are looking for an alternative, I would suggest Big W, Best n Less, Target and Lowes. They all stock navy jumpers and tracksuit pants.
Thank you once again for your patience and understanding.

Run Club Update
We have now had a few weeks of Run Club on a Wednesday morning and every week we are getting more and more students out there doing their laps. For those who don’t know, Musgrave has been running Run Club for many years. Mr Croucher is on the oval every Wednesday morning (weather permitting of course) at 8:00am. The students run laps to get enough kilometres to earn themselves a Run Club badge. The badges come in a rainbow of colours which consist of 10km, 25km, 50km, 75km, 100km, 125km, 150km, 175km, 200km, 250km, 300km, 350km, 400km, 450km and 500km. Many of our students have been lucky enough to gain their 500km GOLD Badge which is a great achievement. Over the years we have also run a competition for most laps run by a class as well as most laps for individual boy and girl for the year.
Every newsletter I will be posting the up to date statistics for our Run Club.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 2 LILAC
2 Lilac have been busy learning all about sea creatures! We were even lucky enough to visit Sea World in week 4! We packed our rain jackets and positive attitudes for a wonderful excursion. We saw amazing animals and learnt all about polar bears, jelly fish, sharks and even penguins. One of the highlights was definitely the action-packed dolphin show! When we arrived back at school, we wrote information texts about the fascinating animals we had seen.
The children have loved learning all about ocean creatures this term!
