FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Welcome to Term 2, 2022

Special welcome to those families who have joined our school community for the start of Term 2, 2022. The autumn vacation has provided a time to rest and recharge for a busy term ahead. Despite the short first two weeks, students have settled back into familiar routines and teachers continue to ensure each day students are provided with the best learning opportunities.

ANZAC Commemoration

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Words cannot express how grateful I am to Ms Bransdon, Ms Graham, Ms Pearce and Ms Kelsey for the outstanding job they did to ensure such a special commemoration was a true reflection of the ANZAC spirit. It was a truly moving ceremony and it is always wonderful to have all our students in the one place, respectfully paying tribute to an event that holds so much significance in Australian history. It was a good time to pause, reflect and consider the work and sacrifice that our service men and women give to ensure our safety and freedom. A special thank you to the many students who spoke about what ANZAC day means to them and to 1 Amber and 3 Navy for their heart-felt performances.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

It is so exciting to be a part of a school where parents and teachers work together for the benefit of the children. In Years 5 and Year 6, we will be conducting our 3 Way Interview process which involves the parent, teacher and student. Our Prep to Year 4 will hold the more traditional Parent/Teacher interview process where it is just the parent and teacher involved. These meetings will be an excellent opportunity to meet with all of our families to discuss current progress and to collaboratively set goals for the remainder of the year.

Year 1 to Year 6-: Interviews are scheduled to commence Week 5, Monday 16th May through to Friday 20th May.

Prep-: Interviews are scheduled to commence Week 6, Monday 23rd May through to Friday 27th May.

A letter will be sent home next week from your child’s class teacher to book in your interview time.

Best of Luck to Mr Anthony Clark

The Cross-Country day was our wonderful, entertaining and always happy Mr Clark’s last day at Musgrave Hill. Anthony has taken up an exciting new opportunity to work at another school which is wonderful for him and his family. He has given so much of himself to our students, staff and community.

I know you will all join me in wishing Anthony Clark all the best in his new adventure. His new school is very fortunate to have him. Thanks Clarky, you will be missed.

Gardening Club

At Musgrave Hill, we are proud of our school and its appearance. We’ve noticed that a few of our gardens are needing some TLC. Some of our students have shown a keen interest in gardening and together with our teacher aides, Mr Goldman and Mr Newton, have created their very own ‘gardening club.’

Mr Goldman reached out to Arundel Bunnings, who kindly donated equipment and plants. We wanted to make this project child-centred as much as possible, so we took the students to Bunnings.

The students were very grateful and so respectful to Fiona, the Bunnings 'fairy'.

Upon arrival back to school, the students were so keen to get to work they started on our front entrance garden straight away. If you’re passing through, take the time to admire their hard work.

The club is not only making our school beautiful it is also assisting our students to work in a team; building their work ethic. The students will need to be hardworking, resilient and persevere as they transform our school's landscape. They will be giving themselves a sense of pride as they create and redesign our gardens to look appealing. They will have ownership of the gardens and will need to nurture and maintain them to see them grow.

We are super excited about this project and we look forward to the work the students produce.

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER

When Our Children Have Big Feelings

Have you ever had a child ask you a question or tell you a worry that you are not quite sure how to answer? Despite the fact that adults often feel they need to have all the answers for children, it is not uncommon to be stumped by a tricky question or situation.

It is perfectly okay if adults don’t have all the answers. The most important message we can give our children is that all feelings are okay to have, and that we can get through these big feelings. Below are some ideas on what you can say to your child when they might be experiencing big feelings of worry.

Most children are very resilient and with a little reassurance are able to bounce back from feelings of worry. Of course, if your child experiences persistent worries or you feel that there is a sudden change in their behaviour or mood that doesn’t improve over time, you should seek out help from your General Practitioner or a medical professional to advise how best to support your child.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 1 BLUE

1 Blue have had a great start to term 2. As part of our English block, we have begun a new exercise called 'Dictation'. The students are reading a paragraph in small chunks over a week, which compliments the spelling sound from the week before. Sentence by sentence, word by word, students write down what is read to them. This gives them an opportunity to work on their encoding skills, handwriting, writing stamina, understanding of sentence boundaries and punctuation, listening skills, and editing.

It is heart-warming to see the day-by-day improvement that is evident in each work sample, and the pride that 1 Blue students have in their work. Even reluctant or new writers are giving it a go, making improvements and meeting goals.
