Devastating Weather Event
Along with other areas of South East Queensland, the Gold Coast has been impacted by the significant weather event bringing torrential rains, flash flooding and record flood peaks. I’d like to acknowledge any members of our community who have been affected by this event and it's times like these that we rely on one another and can support one another.
The government’s decision around closing schools was designed to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our staff, our students and our school community.
COVID Restrictions Easing
On Tuesday 22 February, the Premier announced the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in Queensland including the state-wide mask mandate from 6 pm on Friday 4 March. We have reviewed our MHSS COVID-Safe back to school plan and adjusted it accordingly.
As always, our priority is on maintaining the health and safety of our MHSS students, staff and community. While we continue to experience positive COVID cases within our school setting, we will adopt a slow reintroduction to a number of our processes and procedures.
Key Points-:
- Face masks will no longer be required to be worn by staff or students.
- Staff and students who wish to continue to wear a face mask can do so.
- We will return to one Meet and Greet area for Years 1 to 6.
- Prep will continue to meet in the Prep area.
- Assemblies will return for students only.
- Any planned incursions or excursions will be permitted.
- Parent/Teacher meetings can resume via appointment only.
- Morning entry is still via the front gate.
- One parent can escort their child to the Meet and Greet area. Please note it is a quick drop, kiss and go.
Due to the mass exodus of students at the end of the day, I ask that parents please remain outside the school gates and follow the procedures below-:
- If you walk, or park and walk, please collect your child/children from the Walk-up Zone which is located on the grassed area outside the Prep Building. Please wait outside the gate and ensure that social distancing occurs. Your child/children will be escorted to you.
- If you are driving to collect your child/children, please enter the Pick-up Zone, remain in your vehicle and your child/children will be escorted to you.
- Please remember - anyone who is working or volunteering at a school site must be fully vaccinated for COVID 19. All volunteers and helpers are required to sign in at the office and show proof of vaccination.
Thank you for your understanding of the COVID safe protocols that we have in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students, staff and the community.
If Your Child is Sick/Symptomatic
To keep our school community COVID-19 safe, students must not attend school if they are unwell or have COVID - 19 symptoms. Students should attend their local Queensland Health testing clinic where they will be prioritised to receive a rapid antigen test (RAT).
If the test result is negative and the student is well, they can return to school.
If the test is positive, the student will need to follow Queensland Health quarantine and isolation requirements.
Learning materials if your child is in isolation due to illness or as a close contact
The learning@home website has resources for students in Prep to Year 10. Students are also able to view quality curriculum-based television programs on three different stations – programming information can be found at Learning@Home TV.
Additional resources are also available at The Learning Place. Students will need their EQ user name and password to access.
Teachers will not be providing online learning materials or printed materials as they will be engaged in full time face to face teaching.
Further information on supporting your child, maintaining healthy learning routines and setting up a learning space at home can be found at

A Message from our Environmental Captain
Clean Up Australia Day
Hi everyone,
I would like to remind everyone of a very important day, Sunday March 6th, which is Clean Up Australia Day.
I would love everyone to be involved and it would be great if everyone picked up even one bit of rubbish on the day.
That could be 600 pieces of rubbish that won’t end up in the waterways and beaches and potentially 600 sea creatures that we could help!
Let’s Clean up Australia Day on March 6th and keep the Gold Coast beautiful.
Jai B – Environmental Captain

The works consist of constructing a new footpath (missing link) adjacent to Musgrave Hill Community Childcare Centre. The works also include:
- Constructing 2 x pedestrian ramps.
- Reconstruction of Kerb & Channel.
- Asphalting shoulder area for off street parking.
Traffic control will be in place for the duration of works, approximately 4 weeks (weather permitting).
TUCKSHOP NEWS
All Tuckshop orders need to be placed via the Qkr! App by 9.00am each morning. If your child receives a ‘Musgrave Way Award’, simply write a note with your child’s name and class and what they would like and attach the award to the note. We are still currently abiding by the Covid-19 rules of no payments or parents at the counter.
Looking for an easy lunch box item you can make ahead of time, that is budget friendly and easy to make? Well I have just the thing for you……
Tuna Pasta Salad
Ingredients
- ½ small red onion diced
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 250g spiral pasta
- 2 x 150g tinned tuna (drained)
- Red capsicum
- 1 can corn kernels
- 1 cup frozen peas (thawed)
- 1/3 cup Greek yoghurt
- 1/3 cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup chopped parsley
- Salt & pepper
Method:
- Combine the lemon juice and red onion in a bowl and set aside to marinate.
- Cook the pasta following the instructions on the packet (roughly 12mins).
- Finely dice the red capsicum so the pieces are the same size as the corn and peas.
- Combine all the ingredients including the marinating onions in a large bowl and mix well. You can add a tbsp more of mayonnaise or Greek yoghurt if you think it needs more dressing.
You can substitute the tuna for salmon, chicken or simply leave it as a vegetable pasta salad.
I find that this salad feeds my four girls lunch for 2 days each and roughly costs me around $10.00 to make which works out at $1-2 per lunch item. You can bulk this pasta up with other items too. I have added beans, chicken, celery and carrot. The options are endless. This can also make a good side dish for BBQ’s, I hope you enjoy.
UNIFORM NEWS
The uniform room is currently waiting on a delivery of stock. Unfortunately, due to Covid and the recent floods we are not sure when the items will arrive. As soon as stock is delivered and counted I will be filling all the backorders, then placing the items available on Qkr!
Attention Current Year 6 Students
We will be placing our second and final order for senior shirts this term. The cut-off date for orders/payment is Friday 18th March at 2.30pm. The order will be placed that afternoon and we should receive the stock around week 2 or 3 of Term 2.
Please remember we only order what you order, so please double check your sizes as there are no returns or refunds.
Please ensure your uniforms are clearly labelled with a permanent marker so you have a better chance of having them returned to your child if they are lost.

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER
Talking to Your Children About Natural Disasters
We certainly hope that everyone is safe and well following the recent floods in South East Queensland. Whether you were directly impacted by the floods or simply exposed to the many distressing images and news, it is likely that your children will have questions and possibly worries regarding the recent weather event.
The Queensland Children’s Hospital has created a picture book to support conversations with your child about floods. You can access this by clicking the link below.
https://www.childrens.health.qld.gov.au/chq/our-services/mental-health-services/qcpimh/natural-disaster-resources/storybooks/?fbclid=IwAR1JiphXKpRTNSW13-8DlMZAWys5akCeYmjaN5Lj6bhexsGK6NC6SQZm4lc
Children do best when presented with the facts as well as reassuring messages such as, there was a flood and many people’s houses were damaged, there hasn’t been a flood like this for many years, we are safe here.
As always, if your child or your family requires additional support at this time, please reach out to us at school. Your classroom teacher is always your best initial point of contact and they can connect you with our Admin Team or Guidance Officer if required.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – PREP SILVER
We have had a wonderful start in Prep Silver. We are settling into some school routines and are enjoying learning and getting to know each other. Some of our favourite things have been learning new sounds, making patterns, playing on the Spiderman playground, eating healthy snacks at Munch and Crunch, playing in home corner and recognising our emotions in the Zones of Moderation.
Mrs Mac and I are very proud of the way the children have settled into big school.
