FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Well we have come to the end of another great term and I would like to thank everyone involved at Musgrave for making it a term to remember. I cannot wait to see what Term 4 brings.

Planning for 2022

Planning for 2022 is in full swing....... Last week we held our ‘Prep Classroom Experience’ which was very well attended by our future Prep students and families. The feedback from parents has been extremely positive and they are looking forward to joining our Musgrave family in 2022. Over the past month we have also commenced our Prep enrolment interviews. These interviews are all held with the aim of ensuring that our prep students make a positive start to their schooling here at Musgrave Hill State School.

It is important that we get our enrolment numbers for 2022 as accurate as possible so I ask you to please do the following:

  • Ensure that you have enrolled your child for Prep if they are to commence next year.
  • Let anyone you know who intends to attend Musgrave Hill State School in 2022 not only in Prep but all year levels to come and get an enrolment pack to complete as soon as possible.
  • Please inform the office ASAP if your child will be leaving Musgrave Hill and therefore not be attending our school next year.

Our Prep classes are filling very quickly as are some of our other year levels so the earlier people apply and enrol the more likely they will be able to attend our fabulous school.

Maths Bee

We have just completed the Musgrave Hill Maths Bee and it was a wonderful success. It has been a great and fun way to reinvigorate a love of Mathematics. As with the Spelling Bee we held earlier in the year, each class had their own individual competition to find their best Maths person and then the class champions faced off against one another in a year level battle to find the overall Maths Champion for that year level. Every student involved did an amazing job and should be extremely proud of their effort and achievement. More information and results are in another section of the newsletter.

Attendance

Our current Attendance Rate for Term 3 is sitting at 89.9%. This is well below our target.

As a school community can we please ensure your child/ren are at school learning every day. Let’s work together to increase this rate for the reminder of the year and hit 93%.

A reminder to parents that “EVERYDAY COUNTS”.

Happy Holidays – Tuesday 5th October starts Term 4

Term 3 finishes today and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. I hope you all have a wonderful and refreshing break. Please note that school restarts on Tuesday, 5th October as there is a Public Holiday on the Monday. Please help keep our school safe by staying out of the school grounds over the holidays and reporting any suspicious trespassers or behaviour to the police or School Watch on 13 1788.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 4 PINK

As part of our English and Science unit this term, students have been exploring the effects of forces by creating cardboard games. The students have worked collaboratively in small groups to plan, design and test their games. They have then worked independently to produce a procedure for how to set up, play or build their game.

Sheet Pan Teriyaki Salmon (can use chicken breast as well)

Ingredients

For the Salmon and Vegetables, you will need:

  • 2 cups sweet potatoes, cubed
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 6 ounce salmon fillets (frozen or fresh it’s up to you)
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 shallots - sliced

For the Teriyaki Sauce, you will need:

  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2 garlic cloves - minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar - packed
  • 1 tablespoon corn starch
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds

Prep

Ensure that your salmon fillets are completely defrosted.

Dice the sweet potatoes into bite size pieces, cut the broccoli into bite size florets, slice the shallots and mince the garlic.

Preheat your oven to 180°C.

Create

In a medium bowl, add the diced sweet potatoes and 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil. Toss until the potatoes are all coated.

Transfer the sweet potatoes to a large baking sheet and season with salt and pepper.

Place the sheet pan in the oven and roast the potatoes for 15 minutes, tossing once halfway through.

While the sweet potatoes are roasting, make the teriyaki sauce.

In a medium saucepan, add the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, ground ginger, and brown sugar. Mix well and bring to a boil over medium high heat.

Whisk together the corn-starch and water. Once the sauce is boiling, mix in the corn-starch slurry. Stir for a few seconds until the sauce thickens, then remove the pan from the heat, stir in the sesame seeds, and set aside to cool.

After the sweet potatoes are done roasting, push them to the outside edge of the sheet pan. Lay the fillets of salmon in the centre, sightly apart from each other. Brush on 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

Mix the broccoli and shallots with the remaining tablespoon of olive oil in the same bowl that was used for the sweet potatoes. Season lightly with salt and pepper and toss well.

Add the broccoli mixture to the sheet pan all around the salmon.

Reserve 1/4 cup of the teriyaki sauce for later use. Drizzle the remaining sauce evenly over the salmon and vegetables.

Return the sheet pan to the oven and roast for an additional 15 minutes or until the salmon is slightly translucent in the centre and it flakes easily with a fork. The vegetables should be fork tender.

You can serve this meal as is, right off the sheet pan. Or, serve it over rice or noodles for a heartier dish. Drizzle with the reserved teriyaki sauce, if desired.

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER

School holidays are an exciting time for children, but can also be tricky with the normal routine of school paused and lots of changes. It can become a battle to get children to follow directions for every day routines such as coming to the table for dinner or getting ready for the day.

Transitions from one activity to another can cause children to move into a fight or flight state. In order to support children to calm and follow your direction, a playful approach is often very effective. Playfulness while giving children instructions will calm their brains and encourage them to feel safe and ultimately do what you need them to do!

Some ideas for playful transitions are below, using your child’s unique interests will make your instructions even more appealing.

Wishing you a fabulous and fun school holidays together, whatever that looks like for your family.

Tamara Napper – Guidance Officer
