FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
I did not think we would be here again in a lockdown, but here we are. I want to thank you all for your support throughout a difficult week. It is my hope that I get to have all the kids back at school on Monday but only time will tell.
We live in challenging times but at the same time I feel blessed to be in Queensland when I consider the battle NSW are currently going through. I’m grateful every day to be the Principal of this amazing school and to have a school community so vigilant and caring of each other. While school life is a little different at the moment, our on-line learning platform will ensure our students don’t miss a beat during the lockdown.
Please ensure you check emails over the weekend for any updates we send through so you know exactly what is happening in regards to Musgrave Hill.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 3 VIOLET
Earlier this year, 3 Violet participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime from Space. We joined NASA astronaut Dr Shannon Walker as she read the story called ‘Give Me Some Space!’ from the International Space Station. We were learning about the Earth, Sun and Moon in Science, so it was interesting to see inside the International Space Station, especially when the book began floating around. We received an official certificate to recognise our participation in this exciting event.
Imagine living in SPACE!

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER
COVID-19 and Lockdown: Supporting children’s feeling
We are thinking of our students and families as we head back into lockdown this week. While children may not fully understand the need for lockdown, they’ll probably have many and mixed feelings about the experience.
For example, some children might feel:
- Sad or frustrated that they can’t see their friends or other important people in their lives
- Worried that someone they love may get sick
- Confused about why everyone is at home
Other children might:
- Find they are enjoying the connection and attention from parents
- Enjoy the predictability of knowing what to expect in their day
- Enjoy fun and creative ways to connect with friends
Children will cope best if they have accurate, age-appropriate information about COVID-19 and Lockdown. They need opportunities to ask questions and talk about feelings.
Here are some steps you can take to support your children through this time.
1. Make time to talk about COVID-19 and Lockdown
Find time to give your child your full attention to talk with them about what is happening. It is OK if you are not always available to talk with your child. If you are busy with something else, let your child know that you can’t listen right now. For example, “I’m just on the phone right now, see? Can we talk after you’ve finished drawing?” Just ensure that you do make time later.
2. Use a calm and reassuring tone
Your children will look to you for reassurance, ensuring you are providing calm, reassuring messages to your child will help them feel safe and secure.
3.Find out what your child knows about Lockdown
It’s a good idea to start by asking your child what they know about the Lockdown situation in QLD and whether they have any questions. For Example:
“There are lots of people talking about Covid-19. Do you know what it is?”
“You won’t be going to school for a while, but some of your friends are still going. Do you understand why?”
“We can’t go to swimming lessons at the moment. Do you know why?”
4. Explain lockdown in a way your child understands
Stick to the facts, focus on the positives, reassure your child that this situation won’t last forever, and explain what your family can do to help. For example:
“Covid-19 is a virus that makes people sick, it’s a lot like when you get a cold, so it spreads easily if you sneeze or cough.”
“We need to stay at home right now and wash our hands so we can protect ourselves and others from getting sick.”
“We don’t know how long things will be like this, but it won’t be forever.”
5. Tune into your child’s feelings
While some children might be OK with staying home, others might be worried or frustrated. Ask your children how they are feeling, listen to their answers and let them know that their feelings are OK. You can model some positive thinking too by noticing moments of enjoyment or happiness throughout your day.
“I really enjoyed colouring in with you today.”
“It’s fun to be able to stay in our PJs this morning.”
“I can see you are disappointed that we couldn’t see your friend, let’s make time to give a friend a call today”.
“I can’t wait to do some baking with you when I’ve finished my work.”
“It’s been great to hear how clever you are at your school work.”
