Newsletter Articles

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

This is the last newsletter for Term 2. It is hard to believe we are halfway through the school year. I would like to take the opportunity to thank our parents for their continued support, our wonderful students and our dedicated staff.

Thank you for your ongoing support with our uniform policy. It is now a little chilly in the mornings and afternoons so please ensure your child has an appropriate school jumper or jacket. I thank you also for your support by assisting us with the majority of students in black shoes as per our uniform policy. We do have a little way to go to ensure everyone is in the correct footwear but I know we are all working towards making this happen. Please remember if you are purchasing new shoes for your child that they need to be completely black.

This is also my last week as I am taking long service leave in week 10 and also week 1 of Term 3. As always, I am leaving the school in great hands. Tamara Hall will be taking the reins as Principal in my absence and David Bird will step up to Deputy Principal for Years 3 to 6. I look forward to catching up with you all again in week 2.

Report Cards

Your child’s report card will be emailed home to you next Wednesday 23rd June. This is a perfect opportunity to remind all parents that a “C” is worth celebrating. I encourage parents to pay particular attention to the effort grades for each subject and support their children to continually try their hardest at school.

Mums and Dads/Carers sometimes feel disappointed if their child has one or more C’s on their report card. This can be because they understand a ‘C’ to mean ‘average’. However, a ‘C’ does not mean average. A ‘C’ is something to celebrate! Achieving a ‘C means that a student has achieved the required standard for their year level as outlined in the Australian Curriculum.

Hero Day for Slater

A huge success raising over $20,000. On the day we reached an audience of over 1.5 million people. Only last week we received another update from the media manager at the Mater Hospital to say Hero Day for Slater has inspired a journalist from the GC Bulletin to run the GC Marathon in a cape and raise more funds for brain cancer. The Musgrave story ran in a further two publications and we received a message to say it was in the Herald Sun in Melbourne. This has reached a further audience of 166,000.

What an amazing community we have here on “The Hill”.

Attendance – Every Day Counts

I would like to re-iterate to all parents the notion that ‘Every Day Counts’. Can parents please ensure that students are at school every day so that they can achieve success with their learning? We are currently well below our target of 95% attendance, sitting at 91%. Let us set a challenge to see if we can unite on the notion that ‘EVERY DAY COUNTS’ and strive to improve this percentage and aim for 93% attendance for Term 3. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Prep Enrolments 2022

If you have a child that is eligible for Prep in 2022 and have not yet enrolled, please contact our office immediately to ensure a placement. Our Prep interviews are commencing very shortly hence the importance of having all information and enrolment documents. If you are aware of families that have Prep aged children for 2022, can you pass on this information to them. We do not want any families disappointed.

School resumes on Monday 12th July. Please ensure everyone has a relaxing and enjoyable break.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 2 LILAC

This term, 2 Lilac have enjoyed learning about Sea Creatures and writing amazing Information Reports. We went on excursion to Sea World and as ‘Shark Explorers’ studied sharks close up. We enjoyed learning facts about the Great White Shark and used scientific words and connectives to write our sentences. We labelled diagrams and learnt many interesting facts. We are now enjoying learning a Shark Poem for Speech Choir next term!

UNDER 8’S DAY

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER

What is Mental Health?

Mental Health is a positive state of wellbeing used to describe emotional and social wellness. It involves feeling positive about ourselves, the people and events in our lives, and being able to live life to our fullest capacity.

Our mental health influences everything we do:

  • How we think, feel and behave
  • The way we relate to other people
  • The way we respond to the challenges of everyday life; and
  • How we cope with events such as changing jobs, having a baby, retirement, loss and physical illness

Things to do to improve your mental health

  • Exercise daily – at least for 30 minutes
  • Eat healthy foods – avoid drinking too much coffee, eating too much fat, and sugars
  • Visit your doctor regularly to ensure good health
  • Build a community around yourself – having people to talk to makes life happier and more enjoyable
  • Keep busy and involved – in family, school, work, leisure
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Have adequate sleep
  • Seek help if you are feeling down, don’t let the blues take over you
  • Be kind to yourself – do things that you enjoy eg. a relaxing bath, take in a movie, go to dinner
  • Do things for other people – not only will they benefit but it is a boost for you as well
  • Practise thinking good thoughts, avoid bad thoughts
  • Watch comedy shows, seek out humour, laugh loudly

Mental health is an essential part of our overall health and affects our physical health; as our physical health also affects our mental health. It is also strongly related to our behaviour, particularly our social behaviour and relationships with others. So put the effort in and work to be mentally healthy.
