FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Welcome Back

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break and enjoyed the holiday period. It was wonderful to see all of the students and families return to school today ready to commence the new term with smiles on their faces.

All gave some, some gave all - Lest We Forget

ANZAC Day is a very important part of Australian culture and one of the most solemn days on our calendar. I would like to congratulate all of our students for their excellent participation throughout our Anzac Day ceremony. After not being able to hold this event last year due to COVID it was wonderful to be able to have a student ANZAC service in our hall this year to pay tribute to the service men and women of Australia.

The behaviour of the students in the audience and the perfect performance by our school leaders and 2 Mauve students ensured that our school’s ANZAC ceremony was a memorable event for all in attendance.

A big thank you to Mrs Newman for her wonderful organisation of this year’s ceremony.

Cross Country

The Cross Country was held on Friday 23rd April and it was wonderful to see the students participating and encouraging others to do their best. This is a testament to the amazing students that we have at Musgrave Hill State School. It was wonderful to see parents in attendance cheering all our children as they started their races and when they crossed the finish line. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the venue allocated to parents to view this event. Unfortunately when we were planning the event, the Multipurpose Courts was the only area not on the course itself that had some shade. In hindsight, this may not have been the best option but I do thank all who attended.

Winter Uniform

It is great to see that our students are adhering to the ‘School Uniform Policy’, thank you so much for your support. As we enter into the cooler months, students are expected to wear the school winter uniforms and not just jumpers of any colour. It is also important for all uniforms to have student’s names because when we have cold mornings and warm days it is common for students to shed the warmer layers of clothes (jumpers and track pants) during the day and at play times and forget to collect them again. If these items are labelled it is easier to re-unite clothing with the correct owner.

The uniform rule is just as important as every other rule at school and is viewed as such. How can a teacher give a student an ‘A’ comment for behaviour on their report card or select them for Student of the Week or other accolades if every day they demonstrate through their uniform that they choose not to follow our school rules. Please help us promote our school’s great image and reputation in the community by supporting our uniform policy.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

Over the past 3 weeks our teachers have been conducting Parent/Teacher interviews. A huge thank you to all parents that were able to attend, your ongoing support to ensure that at Musgrave ‘Every Student Succeeds’, is appreciated. If you were not able to arrange an interview time please contact your child’s classroom teacher to discuss and monitor your child’s learning journey.

P & C Meeting

Thursday 13th May is our next P & C meeting. It commences at 1.30pm. Please ensure you come through the front office and sign in.

Amazing Student Achievement

Riyo Kawabata in Year 3 has proven last weekend that she will be a force to be reckoned with in the squash arena. Riyo came second in her division in the QLD Southern Region GC Junior Championships. This means she will compete at the Queensland Junior Championships both individually and part of the Southern Region Team in Cairns in June.

Well done Riyo - Musgrave is very proud of you!

WHAT’S HAPPENING

NAPLAN 2021

Next week (Week 4), our Year 3 and 5 students will be sitting NAPLAN. NAPLAN assessments provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so. At Musgrave Hill SS, we prepare students by embedding the skills and knowledge required for NAPLAN in our teaching and learning unit plans. Students can see the types of questions and experience the types of skills required at home by visiting:

http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site

It is important to remember that your child’s NAPLAN results are only “a snapshot’’ of their development in literacy and numeracy every two years. At Musgrave Hill SS, we believe NAPLAN is an opportunity for our students to showcase their knowledge, skills and understanding from the wonderful teaching and learning that happens at our school every day!

NAPLAN will be administered in the paper form on Tuesday – Language Conventions and Writing, Wednesday – Reading and on Thursday – Numeracy. It is important to have all students attending school over these three days.

We are providing breakfast for all Year 3 and 5 students who have RSVP’d at 8.15am, each test morning out on the deck of the hall.

Cross Country 2021

Well the cross country is all wrapped up for 2021. It was amazing to see all the students competing and having fun at a school carnival. The sports captains did an outstanding job leading their houses and promoting sportsmanship throughout the day. Their help with the prep students was truly inspiring.

Congratulations to the Dolphin house who were the overall champions for the carnival.

2021 Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
Information for parents and carers (Year 4-6 students)

Why are we doing the survey?

We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The department and your school are looking at ways to collect information on these important areas so we can support our students in the best way possible.

The Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey is designed to measure how state school students view their wellbeing and engagement.

Results from this survey will tell us about students’ levels of wellbeing and engagement. This information will allow us to better support our students and meet their needs.

When will the survey take place?

In 2021, the QEW Survey will take place between these dates: Mon 31st May and Friday 25th June 2021.

Your child’s school will choose a date within this period that suits them best.

What is the survey about?

The survey measures many aspects of students’ wellbeing, engagement, and experience at school.

The survey asks about:

resilience
school climate
relationships with peers
teachers and at home
sense of belonging
motivation and perseverance
academic self-concept
personal social capabilities
future outlook and aspirations
general life satisfaction
general health

What is involved in participation?

Teachers will arrange for students in Year 4-6 to take part in the Survey online during class time. It will take about 30 minutes to complete. If your child requires additional assistance, teachers and/or support people are able to assist them.

Does your child have to participate?

Participation in the survey is voluntary. Choosing not to participate will not affect your child’s education in any way.

Your child will also be asked if they would like to participate before starting the survey. They will be free to stop or withdraw at any time.

If you do not wish for your child to participate in the QEW Survey, please contact your school.

Your child will still get a link to the survey in their email even if you opt-out, but they won’t be able to get into the survey without the access code given only at the time of completing the survey.

How will your child’s information be kept confidential?

The information collected through the survey will be kept confidential. No personal information will be shared with anyone outside of the Queensland Department of Education. The Queensland Department of Education will store the data according to strict guidelines. The collection of information is in line with the Educational General Provisions Act (2006) and the Information Privacy Act (2009).

How will your child’s responses be reported?

Student’s answers will be de-identified. They will only be reported back to the school as part of their year levels’ results. No one at your child’s school will be able to see their individual responses.

Where can I get more information?

More information, including FAQs, can be found on the Education website:

https://qed.qld.gov.au/publications/reports/statistics/schooling/students/engagement-and-wellbeing-survey

You can contact the QEW Survey team by email: QEWSurvey@qed.qld.gov.au.

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER

Teaching Tolerance

The dictionary defines tolerance as `showing respect for the rights or opinions or practices of others`. In short it is about accepting people for who they are and treating others the way you would like to be treated. Today, more than ever, our children interact with people of differing ethnicities, religions, and cultures, and ability levels. Classrooms are increasingly diverse, and reflect the communities where families live and work. Having tolerance not only improves our relationships with people but it also opens up more opportunities in education, business, and many other aspects of life.

Teaching Tolerance

Live it: Children develop their own values, in great part, by mirroring the values and attitudes of those they care about. Parents' attitudes about respecting others are often so much a part of them that they rarely even think about it. Parents who demonstrate tolerance and respect in their everyday lives give out a powerful message – I accept and respect your uniqueness. As a result, their kids learn to appreciate differences in others as well as themselves, as well as acknowledge and respect differences within their own family.

Talk about tolerance and respect: When media or life experiences present opportunities regarding tolerance or lack thereof, talk to your child about the values you would like them to exhibit. Answer kids' questions about differences honestly and respectfully. This teaches that it is acceptable to notice and discuss differences as long as it is done with respect. Point out and talk about unfair stereotypes that may be portrayed in media.

Remember that tolerance does not mean tolerating unacceptable behaviour. It means that everyone deserves to be treated with respect — and in turn should treat others with respect as well.

Provide opportunities: Give them opportunities to play and work with others of diverse backgrounds. Children learn firsthand that everyone has something to contribute and we really aren’t that different in our thinking and living.

Select books, toys, music, art, and videos carefully. Keep in mind the powerful effect that the media and pop culture have on shaping attitudes.

Build self-esteem: Help your children feel good about themselves. Kids who feel badly about themselves often treat others badly. Kids with strong self-esteem value and respect themselves and are more likely to treat others with respect, too. Help your child to feel accepted, respected, and valued.

Learn about traditions: Learn together about holiday and religious celebrations that are not part of your own tradition.

Honour your family's traditions and teach them to your kids — and to someone outside the family who wants to learn about the diversity you have to offer.

When parents encourage a tolerant attitude in their children, and talk about their values, and model the behaviour they would like to see by treating others well, kids will follow in their footsteps.

If we all could take on board that:

‘EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT
EVERYBODY IS SPECIAL
EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT’

The world would be a better place.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 1 BLUE

In 1 Blue this term we are learning how to write an information report. We have been learning lots of information about animals such as green tree frogs, crocodiles and kangaroos. Each week we write a question about what we want to find out about and we display it on our WONDER WALL. Then we try and find out the answers to our questions throughout the week.

We also can’t wait to go on our first excursion in a couple of weeks to Fleay’s Wildlife Park. We will see lots of Australian animals and learn about their habitats.
