FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Even though it sometimes feels like we have only just returned to school and the year is still young, last Friday marked the mid-point of Term one. One-eighth of our school days are over for the year highlighting the importance each and every day has in the learning journey of our students. Our teachers dedicate vast amounts of time outside of their classroom contact hours ensuring our school programs meet the needs of every student. If students miss class time they miss vital learning time and are placed at a distinct disadvantage to their classmates. Research shows that students who have good patterns of attendance are more likely to achieve at school.
Make 2021 the year that your child does not miss a day of school, unless absolutely necessary.
Parent Information Sessions
A big thank you to the many parents/carers who were able to attend our Information Sessions over the past 2 weeks. I hope that you found them informative and I encourage you to continue to contact your child’s classroom teacher as it helps build stronger and more positive relationships between teachers and parents and keeps you actively involved in your child’s educational journey.
Zones of Regulation
During Pupil Free Days at the beginning of the term our staff undertook further training in unpacking of the Zones of Regulation. The Zones of Regulation curriculum is designed to help students learn to identify their feelings and emotional reactions and learn sensory and perspective-taking strategies to encourage better self-regulation across different situations. A simple colour-coded, four-zone format encourages learning. The Green Zone is used to describe a calm state of alertness. A person may be described as happy, focused, content, or ready to learn when in the Green Zone. This is the zone where optimal learning occurs. The Zones of Regulation will work alongside our Behavioural Expectations and our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Compassion and Excellence.
So if you are hearing your child speak about being in a colour zone, hopefully this will help explain a little as to why. We are hoping to run some parent sessions later in the year around the Zones to ensure that the partnership between school and home is further strengthened.
The Importance of Reading everyday
Recently I read an article from Professor John Hattie relating to his research on the significant impact reading in the early years has upon vocabulary development. In its simplest form, the more you read the more words you know. This in turn has a measurable impact on subsequent academic performance. The following statistics show the importance of why reading is vital in our student’s lives and why here at Musgrave Hill it is one of our highest priorities.
- Student A reads for 20 minutes a day, a total of 1 800 000 words in a year and achieves in the 90th percentile ranking on a standardised test.
- Student B reads for 5 minutes a day, a total of 28 200 words in a year and achieves in the 50th percentile ranking on a standardised test.
- Student C reads for 1 minute a day, a total of 8 000 words in a year and achieves in the 10th percentile ranking on a standardised test.
In the years prior to formal schooling, children develop their oral language (vocabulary) through being read to and via discussion of the world around them. Please help us to continue to make reading our focus and encourage your child/ren to read at home.
P & C
We will be holding our first face to face P & C meeting for some time on Thursday 11th March at 1.30pm until 2.30pm. As we still need to adhere to our COVID safety plan, it is imperative that you RSVP via the front office. As we can only permit 10 parents plus the Executive Team into the space in which we hold our meetings, we have to take the first in best dressed option, so if you are wanting to join us please ensure you RSVP.
Parents and Carers – Do we have your most up to date contact details?
There are times when we may need to get in touch with you. Do we have your most up to date details? If not, please contact the school on 5644 5555 or admin@musgravehillss.eq.edu.au so we can update our records. These details include your name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to let the school know if any of these details change.

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER
Helping kids become resilient
Definition: ‘Resilience – the ability to cope in times of stress or hardship.’
As parents we work to equip our children with the tools they need to solve their own problems, to respond to difficulties, to feel good about themselves and others, and to perceive the future in a hopeful and confident manner.
It would be great if all children arrived with a Do it Yourself Manual but here are some ideas to help your child become resilient.
Brooks and Goldstein talks of 10 key principles for resilience
- Be empathetic – teach understanding of how another person might feel, recognize your own feelings
- Communicate and listen effectively – and respond to what your child is saying
- Love your children in ways that make them feel special and appreciated – let them know you love them unconditionally.
- Accept your child for who they are and help them to set reasonable goals – goals for today, and goals for the future. It’s good to work towards something.
- Help them experience success in whatever they show competence in (even if it’s collecting bugs)
- Focus on positives, reword negative talk – sometimes the positive may be hard to see, but it’s there. Always end a conversation with something positive. Instead of saying `don’t ….’, say ‘what you want your child to do’.
- Help them to understand that ‘mistakes’ are just things yet to be learnt
- Develop responsibility, compassion and social awareness by providing opportunities where you child can contribute or give back to others.
- Teach your child to solve problems and make decisions (What’s the problem? What are the choices? Which is the best choice? Try it. If it doesn’t work review your choices.)
- Discipline in a way that promotes self- discipline and self-worth. Punishment is one form of discipline and often a least effective form as it teaches the child what not to do rather than what to do, and can often build resentment. It is difficult to teach your child a better way to behave when you yourself are angry and upset. So be calm, tell your child what you want them to do, and praise your child for doing the right thing. Have a plan in place for dealing with noncompliance. But be calm. Your child is watching you and will copy how you behave.
In following these principles, we will contribute to helping our children be resilient, to be emotionally healthy, equipped to successfully confront challenges, and bounce back from setbacks.
