FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Parent Information Sessions
Our Parent Information Sessions have commenced this week with the remaining year levels occurring next week. This is a great opportunity to meet your child’s teacher while continuing to strengthen partnerships between home and school. At these sessions you will be given a snapshot of information about school priorities, classroom routines and expectations and an insight into the units of work to be covered.
I hope most families can take advantage of this opportunity and I look forward to catching up with you.
Every Day Counts
At Musgrave Hill State School, our attendance target is 95%. To achieve this target, children must have less than 10 days absent.
Below is our attendance for the first 3 weeks of the year. As you can see we have some work to be done if we are to reach our target.

Pick Up and Drop Off Zones
Unfortunately, as Principal I have no jurisdiction over traffic around the school. My role is to encourage and engage with the school community to request that parents are aware of and follow the road rules and school rules relating to driving, parking, drop off and pick-ups around the school. It is the parents' responsibility to know and please follow the road rules.
Please can I ask that you do not leave your car unattended in those areas of a morning or afternoon. I am meeting with the Principal of Southport Special School in the coming weeks in an attempt to see what we can do to help reduce and alleviate some of the traffic flow issues at those key times. Everything will be back on the table including reviewing our start and finish times again. I will keep you updated.
Student Code of Conduct
All state schools in Queensland have been asked to review their Behaviour Support Plans and include the most up-to-date strategies to support children to make positive choices. A copy of Musgrave Hill’s new Code of Conduct has been uploaded on our website. It is lengthy and some of the wording is generic from our Education Department and so cannot be altered but I believe you will see the intent of the policy is to support your children and our school to be a safe, kind and respectful place for students and adults to learn and work. The document has been reviewed by our staff and endorsed by our School Council. It will be presented to our P&C later this term.
Chaplaincy
Rusanne (Rusty) is the Chaplain here at Musgrave Hill State School and is currently here on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The Chaplain provides social, emotional and spiritual support to students, parents and staff. This support can take the form of assisting teachers or students in the classroom or playground and by organising and supervising fun activities for students to take part in during break times. Where consent is provided the Chaplain may also work one-on-one with students that would benefit from further support.
Reminder Message from The Department
Accident insurance cover for students
Some school activities and physical education, particularly contact sports, carry inherent risks of injury.
Parents are advised that the department does not have Student Accident Insurance cover for students.
If your child is injured at school as a result of an accident or incident, all costs associated with the injury, including medical costs, are the responsibility of the child, parent or caregiver.
Medicare may cover some incidental medical costs. If parents have private health insurance, some costs may also be covered through the private health insurance. Any other costs would be borne by the parents. Student Accident Insurance is an insurance policy that pays certain benefits in certain circumstances should your child have an accident.
It is a personal decision for parents as to the types and levels of private insurance they arrange to cover their child for any accidental injury that may occur. Parents should contact their insurer or an approved Australian insurance broker for more information about student personal accident insurance cover for their child.
Bike / Scooter Safety
Please remember to ensure students are wearing helmets and riding safely to and from school. Students are required to walk bikes and scooters into and out of the school ground. Please remind students to be careful of vehicles and pedestrians, as we do not want accidents to occur.

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER
Helping Your Child Successfully Separate at School
Separation anxiety in children is when children fear being parted from their parents or guardians. It is common and normal among babies and toddlers. A very small number of prep and school-age children develop a more serious form of the condition, called separation anxiety disorder.
Worry is a natural emotion and a protection mechanism. Worry rings an alarm in our system and helps us survive danger. Teach your kids that worry is perfectly normal, it can help protect us, and everyone experiences it from time to time. Sometimes our system sets off false alarms, but this type of worry (anxiety) can be put in check with some simple techniques.
The following are some suggestions to help your child separate from you more confidently and transition successfully into the school environment:
- Prepare your child for school by practicing separating in different situations. It's important to give your child positive experiences of separations and reunions. Avoiding separations from your child can make the problem worse.
- Read books or make up stories with your child about separation (prepare them and give them a positive picture of the new experience).
- Develop a school drop off routine. For example, Mum or Dad will come with you into the classroom, watch you put your bag away, give you a hug and then leave.
- Say goodbye to your child briefly – don’t drag it out. Keep a relaxed and happy expression on your face when you’re leaving. If you seem worried or sad, your child might think the place isn’t safe and can get upset too.
- Talk with the class teacher about helping your child settle into an enjoyable activity before you leave.
- Avoid reassuring your child when they are visibly upset. They are not able to process your words when they are in a distressed state.
- Help your child work through a checklist if they are distressed. For example 1) Take 3 deep breaths 2) Notice your stomach going up and down as you breath 3) stretch your arms up high and 4) Shake the worries away.
- Demonstrate and practise the checklist strategies with your child regularly.
