FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Musgrave Hill Shines Again

Last week I received an email from the Department of Education, Strategic Communication and Engagement Officer in Central Office. They are looking to update their corporate photo library and have selected our wonderful school. On Tuesday 17th March, our school will get a free, professional photo shoot. They will spend approximately four hours at our school with a professional photographer and crew. We will get a copy of all the photos taken so we can use in our own communication materials and flyers. More excitingly, our school, our staff and our students will be the face of future Department of Education corporate communication campaigns. It is a huge honour and we are very excited by the prospect. I would love every one of my students and staff to be involved but obviously, that would be impossible so we have selected four different scenarios to highlight our wonderful school. Permissions will be sent home to those students that will be a part of the shoot.

Latest Update from Qld Health as of 3rd March 2020

Obviously, there are major concerns throughout Australia and the world regarding the outbreak of the Coronavirus. We are always receiving updated advice from public health authorities so I thought it important to share the latest information we have received.

If students/parents/staff have travelled from mainland China or Iran, or been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus, special restrictions apply. You must isolate yourself, which means you stay at home and do not attend public places, including work, school or childcare.

Who needs to isolate?

To help limit the spread of coronavirus, you must isolate yourself in the following circumstances:

If you have left, or transited through, mainland China in the last 14 days you must isolate yourself for 14 days from the date of leaving mainland China.

If you have left, or transited through Iran on or after 1 March, you must isolate yourself until 14 days after leaving Iran.

If you have been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus, you must isolate yourself for 14 days from the date of last contact with the confirmed case.

While coronavirus is of concern, it is important to remember that most people displaying symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat or tiredness are likely suffering with a cold or other respiratory illness — not coronavirus.

Some Important Parent Reminders

For the Safety of our Students -

A friendly reminder that unless you are attending a scheduled school activity or meeting, or collecting your child/ren after you have signed them out through the office, that you please do not enter the school grounds until the end of the school day at 2.40pm. Once you have collected your child/ren, I ask that you please exit the school grounds by 3.15pm.

Playgrounds

Please be aware that the playgrounds are not for use before or after school. This is a significant safety issue for the school, as unsupervised access to the playground is more likely to result in injuries or someone getting hurt. All children from Year 1 to 6 are to go straight to the Meet and Greet area outside the hall immediately upon arrival at school.

Please also be aware, that weekend or after-school access to the school grounds is not permitted except if your child is participating in an event hosted by one of the businesses who hire our school facilities or a scheduled school event.

FINANCE FACTS

Thank you to all parents who have paid the SRS (Student Resource Scheme) in full or the first payment. Statements will be sent home soon to let you know the balance of your child’s account. If the statement has a negative amount your account is in credit. Do not pay this amount.

When students are invited to attend an excursion an invoice is created, this has a positive amount for you to pay. After the excursion has been completed the students who did not participate still have this invoice on their account so to clear their account an adjustment note is created. This has a negative amount, the finance system then matches the positive and negative to clear the account.

Parents when you receive an invoice please ask your child for the permission note or contact their teacher for the information.

TUCKSHOP NEWS

Firstly, I would like to say a big thank you to all the students that have bought a Slushee with our new reusable cups and returned them. We have had a 100% success rate so far. This is great news for us not only as a school but as a community as we are teaching our children the importance of reusable items and thinking seriously about the impact it can have on our environment. In the upcoming weeks we will be working very closely with our Environmental Club to find some more ways to reduce our waste and looking at using our recyclable items for great causes. The students get a free slushee after they have returned four cups and this has proven to be very exciting for them. We have handed out our first lot of free slushee’s this week.

On another note please remind your children that we don’t encourage food sharing at school. If they bring money in to spend we are monitoring the amount they are purchasing and reminding them that they are not to buy anything for their friends.

Uniform News

Firstly, I would like to apologise for the uniforms being unavailable. Unfortunately we did not received the shipment we were promised last week. We are in contact with the supplier and should know something soon. I understand the frustration you are all feeling and I feel exactly the same as I have children at the school. I am also waiting for uniforms to arrive and being down to one shirt can be quite tough. As soon as we receive the goods we will be filling all the backorders and sending out notifications to staff and families. I do understand that sometimes you want to talk to a person but I ask that if you haven’t received a text message, email or seen the notification on your QSchools app or on our school noticeboard advising that the uniforms have arrived then please do not come up to the uniform shop as I will just be explaining the same thing again. Please know that as a school we are doing everything we can to ensure these uniforms are here as quickly as possible.

P&C News

I would like to thank everyone who turned up for our P&C meeting last Thursday; it was lovely seeing some new faces. Our next meeting is our AGM which will be held on Thursday 12th March at 2.00pm in the Science Room. Could you please sign in with our lovely ladies in the front office before you attend, you will need to sign in as administration visitors, I am sure if you are having any trouble signing in, the lovely ladies will be able to help you out. The AGM will run for approximately 15 mins and then we will have our normal P&C Meeting straight after. If you have any issues you would like to raise at the meeting can I please ask that you email them through to sgras8@eq.edu.au and I will have them added to the agenda. The agenda will be emailed out 1 week prior to all meetings. We will have new membership forms and our membership registration on the day for you to renew or join. I look forward to seeing what amazing ideas we can come up with for this year.

As Easter is fast approaching we will be having a Guess the Easter eggs Competition held in the tuckshop for students to guess an amount of eggs. It will cost 50c a guess, parents and carers are more than welcome to come up each morning and have a guess themselves. I am sure a lot of our staff will be trying to win it as well. All of the eggs were kindly donated.

Sally McWilliams - P&C Treasurer

PICK UP/DROP OFF/LOADING ZONE

The above sign is at the front of our school. It states that there is a 2 minute time limit from 8am until 9am and 2.30pm until 3.30pm on school days. You can only get out of your vehicle to assist children to load bags. At other times during the day it is still a loading zone with maximum parking time being 20 minutes, this applies from the corner of Kumbari Avenue and Nakina Street up to the loading zone 2 min drop off sign. Please be aware that police do patrol our school zones.

School Chaplain Rusty

I would just like to acknowledge the amazing work of Rusty, our School Chaplain. Each week Rusty takes the time to have hundreds of formal and informal chats with our students, teachers, office staff, parents, carers and wider community. During these ‘Chappy Chats’ she offers support and guidance in a wide variety of areas from educational support to social and emotional caring.

Rusty currently works 3 days a week with our school and sees many of our students each week. I can always tell when Rusty is away from the vast amount of students asking where she is.

Recently I attended a School Chaplain breakfast to raise money and awareness for School Chaplain’s. During this breakfast a parent from Musgrave Hill spoke honestly about Rusty and the impact she has made to her life and the support she has offered to her family. She spoke openly about how this support has changed their lives. I was brought to tears hearing the stories from this parent, her battle with cancer, over 700 medical appointments and the impact Rusty had made on their lives, which stemmed far past the boundaries of our school. I would just like to thank Rusty for her endless work with our students and community. Thank you.

Luke Kenelley

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 1 AMBER

NRL ALL STARS GALA DAY

On Thursday the 20th of February, students from Year’s 5 and 6 had an opportunity to represent Musgrave Hill at the NRL All Stars Gala Day at Southport Tigers RLFC. The day featured a few games against other schools as well as some skills rotations with players from the Māori and Indigenous All-Stars men’s and women’s teams. The students were ecstatic to have the opportunity to meet the players and grab a few autographs.

David Bird – Head of Curriculum

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence

As you may be aware, the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence will be held on Friday 20th March. The NDA 2020 marks the 10-year anniversary of Australia's key anti-bullying event for schools. The theme for 2020 is Take Action Together. The NDA is a catalyst for Australian schools to take a stand together against bullying. The day brings together more than 60% of schools nationwide, involving more than two million students in finding workable solutions to address bullying and violence.

Here at Musgrave, classes will be focusing on activities during week 8 that are designed to target bullying and identify ways in which we can ‘take a stand together’ to combat bullying and violence. The week will culminate in a celebration on Friday 20th March, linking Harmony Day with NDA to highlight that we all indeed, belong.

On Friday 20th March, students will be encouraged to wear either an orange t-shirt or something that represents your family culture.

Katie Halsall – Head of Wellbeing

THE ARTS

This semester…

Year 3 are doing Music – They are learning the ins and outs of the Ukulele and after just 3 lessons they have almost mastered 2 chords and their strumming styles – well done!

Year 5 are also doing a music unit. This is a musical theatre unit and the students are working hard to rehearse a routine for the Lip Sync Battle in term 2. I encourage our talented year 5 students to attend all Arts lessons as this is a team effort and absences let the team down. It is very difficult to choreograph a routine if students are missing. Costumes are purposefully basic, but we will be putting calls out in the next few newsletters for costume piece loans/donations. An invitation will be going out to year 5 parents and caregivers prior to the Easter break to give ample time for parents to plan their calendars in order to attend. Last year’s Lip Sync Battle was a wonderful occasion, thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Keep an eye out for your invitations in Week 9.

Year 6 are doing Drama – Theatre Sports. Those who attended thoroughly enjoyed the incursion by the Goat Track Theatre. The students are enjoying the process and are looking forward to the competition in weeks 1 - 6 in term 2 (Thursdays 1:15pm). The teacher team stole the award last year – it will be very interesting to see who takes the trophy this year!

Kerrie Doolan - Arts Teacher

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS

Good News - The Music Room has re-opened after flood repairs were recently completed.

Band lessons are now in the Music Room on Mondays for the remainder of term 1.

String lessons are now in the Music Room on Thursdays for the remainder of term 1.

We are still running an alternate Instrumental Music program this term while we get all remaining instruments replaced and issued to students. If your child does not yet have an instrument issued, they can still come to (our alternate) IM lessons.

Band Rehearsals

There are NO (before school) Band Rehearsals for the remainder of term 1.

Before school rehearsals for band students are scheduled to start in Term 2, Week 2

Southport State High School Strings and Band Days of Excellence

It was wonderful to see so many Musgrave Hill State School students participate in the Southport State High School Strings and Band Days of Excellence in week 5.

Continuing Instrumental Music students from surrounding primary schools came together for two days of jam-packed music-making and making new friends. Students prepared a number of challenging musical pieces which they performed to the school, parents and community at the end of each day.

We are very proud of the way our Musgrave music students presented and conducted themselves. We received lovely comments from the high school about how wonderful it was to see our Musgrave students so well-behaved, polite and participating fully in the workshops.

Welcome Mrs Sarah Thorburn

We welcome Mrs Thorburn to Musgrave Hill State School as the Instrumental Music (Band) teacher for the last four weeks of term 1. Mrs Thorburn brings a wealth of classroom and instrumental music experience and will be a great asset the school during her stay. Mrs Thorburn will replace Mr Denning while he is on leave for family medical reasons. Mr Denning will return to Musgrave Hill at the start of term 2.

Instrumental Music lessons for Band and Strings are well underway

Please remind your child to check their timetable and make sure they come to their lesson at the correct time.

Regards,
Mr Denning, Miss Williams and Mrs Thorburn
