Report Cards
Semester Two report cards will be emailed to parents on Wednesday 11 December 2019. Please make sure your email is current to ensure you do not miss your child’s report. If you would like a hard copy of your child’s report, please let the office know.
I remind all parents that your child will be assessed using a five point scale. This scale is unpacked on the front cover of the report card. Please remember that if your child receives a ‘C’ standard, this means they are working at year level in line with the Australian Curriculum. I would encourage parents to focus on the effort rating and have a discussion with your child around this. This provides you with valuable information in relation to their engagement and work ethic. I encourage parents to discuss any concerns, comments or questions you may have with your child’s class teacher.
Please remember there will be a change to our Semester 2 Report Cards-:
What is the SAME?
- Other Learning Areas (OLA) e.g. Instrumental Music – Effort Rating & individual comments
- Overall General Comments – detailed comment that will include strengths and areas for improvement with relevant input from specialist teachers
- Behaviour – detailed comment
- Extra-Curricular - Information will be included i.e. Sport & Music involvement /achievement
What is DIFFERENT?
- For each Key Learning Areas (KLA) i.e. English, Maths, Science, Technologies, Science, History & Social Science, The Arts, HPE & LOTE – Achievement and Effort Rating only – no additional individual comment
Uniforms 2020
Over the past two years, we have been undertaking a transition into the new school uniform. During this transition, students have been permitted to wear both uniforms but as of January 2020, the new Musgrave Hill State School uniform will be the only uniform allowed.
New Navy Standard School Uniform
Standard Uniform:
- Navy Blue shorts or skorts (Available at Tuckshop or at leading retailers)
- Musgrave Hill navy, green and yellow panel polo shirt, with “Musgrave Hill State School” Emblem embroidered on the collar (available at tuckshop).
- Black shoes and white socks
Winter Uniform:
As above plus the following options:
- Navy blue tracksuit pants and navy blue jumper (available at leading retailers)
- Navy blue tights can be worn under shorts or skorts.
We have placed continuous reminders in our newsletters and spoken at length to students regarding our Black Shoe Policy. It is wonderful to see many families supporting and embracing the policy by ensuring their child/ren come to school each and every day in the correct black shoes. Please see below what is the appropriate and acceptable black shoe.
Enrolments and Classes for 2020
We are currently taking enrolments for 2020. If you have a pre-kindy aged child intending on attending Musgrave Hill State School, it is imperative you have your enrolment form in as soon as possible. We are currently formulating classes for the 2020 school year. If you know your child will not be returning to Musgrave, please make contact with our office. The earlier we know this information, the easier it is to plan. Teachers, alongside the leadership team will make up class lists based on social and academic factors facilitating the best potential learning and social outcomes possible. As in previous years, you will receive a letter at the end of the school year indicating what class and room your child will be in for 2020.
As we are approaching the end of the school year, I ask you to please talk to your child about finishing the year as they started. I understand tiredness can set in however, we have 4 weeks of learning left prior to the end of the year. It is important students continue to adhere to our school values to the best of their ability.

TUCKSHOP NEWS
Please remember the cut off time for ordering from the tuckshop is 9.15am, you can either place your orders on our Qkr! App or over the counter with our lovely tuckshop ladies.
As we move closer to the end of the term, starting from week 8, the tuckshop will run its stock down. In the last week of term, 9th to 13th December, there will only be vegemite, jam or honey sandwiches available for lunches however chips, ice blocks and drinks will be available for purchase over the counter until stocks run out.
Please note that the tuckshop will be closed on Thursday 5th December due to Prep Orientation Day.
As we are on holidays for 6 weeks we like to keep our stock at a minimum level.
Some helpful ideas when packing lunches for this summer
|
Popcorn Cocoa Seed Butter Cherry Tomatoes Carrot Slices Apple Slices Muesli Bar |
|
Hommus Pretzels Cucumber & Carrot Sticks Orange Slices Muesli Bar |
|
Avocado Dip Capsicum & Carrot Slices Crackers Grapes Muesli Bar |
|
Salsa Corn Chips Celery Sticks Berries Muesli Bar |
These are all really healthy and give a good variety of food over the day, they also help minimise the amount of waste around the school. You can even put a sandwich in for something extra, but please don’t forget the WATER!!!!! Remember on hot days it’s really important to drink water that is not too cold as it can cause more harm to tiny little bodies. Another tip is to freeze your fruit, this will keep your lunches nice and cold and keep the fruit nice and fresh.
Uniform News
The Uniform Shop will close this year on Thursday 5th December at 12.00pm and will reopen in the New Year.
On the last week of the school holidays the uniform shop will be open on Wednesday 22nd January 2020 from 9am until 1pm and on Thursday 23rd January 2020 from 1pm until 5pm for all back to school purchases.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 3 WHITE
3 White have been reading Charlotte’s Web and exploring procedures. This week begins our spoken procedure as we transform into a character from the story and help Wilbur escape his fate of becoming Christmas dinner. Role playing, performing skits and writing procedures has prepared us for this challenge though we cannot forget our favourite procedure task, making a jam sandwich! This was our favourite because Ms Thompson followed all of our procedures and ended up with jam on her face. We were still laughing at that when we began following an oral procedure to create a spider web artwork.
Exploration has been a big part of our learning this term and faces came into it again, this time in Mathematics where 3D shapes challenged our minds and hands. We created paper and matchstick 3D shapes. It is really difficult to create a cylinder out of matchsticks and blu-tack, but that did not stop some of us from having a go at it.
Since we love exploring and things getting sticky, science has kept the temperature changing in our States of Matter unit, through experimenting with how liquids, solids and gases work and what happens when we add and remove heat. Who knew that chocolate could be both a solid and liquid depending on how the properties within its state of matter were behaving.
As it is nearly the end of our fabulous year, we better get back to learning before the celebrations can begin. Oh wait! They have begun early as we have been learning all about special days that fall each year and the importance and history behind them. We can hear you say that not all special days are celebrations and we have explored the significance of these also and this week have reflected upon Remembrance Day.
Year 3 has been a blast and we are all looking forward to our new adventures in Year 4, which is only round the corner.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT
A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER
Behaviour is Communication
Much in the same way that a smile can communicate pleasure or happiness, and a frown can communicate sadness or displeasure, behaviour is a powerful means of communication. Often when children don’t understand what they are feeling or don’t know how to express themselves in words, their ACTIONS become their language. Behaviour is a way of expressing what’s happening on the inside. According to family therapist and Therapy Coordinator at Protect All Children Today - Peter Marrington, there are some effective ways of responding to and changing inappropriate behaviour. In order to respond appropriately to inappropriate behaviour we need to realise that:
- We are all different. We have different personalities, and we all respond differently. Behaviour depends on the meaning we give an event.
- Behaviours are illustrations of distress.
- All behaviour is purposeful.
- The underlying causes of the behaviour need to be assessed.
Children may “act-out” (be difficult or aggressive) or “act-in” (in the form of depression, self-harm, or withdrawal), but both forms of behaviour have one thing in common: they are responses to what is causing pain and distress, but the child may be as unaware as the adult of the meaning of the behaviour. When asking a `why’ question often does not necessarily lead to an appropriate reason. The child’s explanation may have no connection with the behaviour, so the answer “I don’t know” is often true!
For effective parenting, as well as giving unconditional love, keeping your child safe, and being there for your child, try these principles:
- Be consistent.
- Be united and have one set of rules.
- Be in charge – you are the parent.
- Be appropriately involved in your child’s growth (the right balance between hanging on and letting go).
- Balance different roles (social, work, family activities).
- Be realistic (age appropriate) expectations.
- Give encouragement but also permission to fail/make mistakes.
