Classes 2020 and Class Placements
Term 4 is when we begin to construct classes and organise staffing for the following year. To help us be as accurate as possible and minimise any changes at the start of next year, please let the office know if your child is leaving and will no longer be with us next year.
An information letter went home to Parents/Carers regarding the process we as a school undertake when placing children into classes for the following year. I urge all parents to read this information prior to any requests as it outlines how to document your requests and what requests can be made.
Prep Enrolments 2020
If you are an existing family of our school with a child beginning Prep next year and you have not enrolled them yet, please make sure you contact the office and fill in the enrolment form so your child is factored into our 2020 classes. Prep places are in extremely high demand for next year and to get the class numbers and mix right we need to know as accurately as possible who will be attending Prep next year.
World Teachers Day
Last Friday was World Teachers’ Day and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated staff and let them know how much I appreciate their work. Celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide, World Teachers' Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1994 to recognise the role of teachers in society.
World Teachers' Day is held internationally on 5 October. As the day usually falls during school holidays, Queensland celebrates on the last Friday of October each year, hence the 25th October.
While this day is called Teachers’ Day, it is not just teachers who make up our valuable workforce. It takes many people to run a school and to provide a learning facility, which children feel proud of and want to learn in. I would like to recognise and acknowledge all of our Musgrave Hill staff; because each and every one plays a vital role in our team and helps educate our students. Education has become an increasingly demanding profession with ever-growing complexities and expectations. The staff at Musgrave are a passionate and dedicated team who keep giving their all, striving for ways to improve student outcomes. I am very impressed at the way our teachers and support staff rise to every challenge, continue their pursuit of excellence, and I am honoured to work with them. Thank you one and all – you make our school a wonderful place to work and learn.
School Leaders for 2020
The School Leaders election process for 2020 is underway with many current year 5 students showing interest in undertaking one of our leadership roles. The applicants are required to complete a detailed application and then go through an interview process with members of our School Leadership Team. From there successful applicants will be shortlisted and head into the next phase in the process. Formal speeches by the shortlisted candidates will be conducted in the coming weeks. After these speeches, the staff and students will be asked to undertake a voting process to identify our School Captains and School Leaders for 2020. All of our school leaders will be formally inducted at a ceremony prior to the end of the school year. I have no doubt that the caliber of students vying for our leadership positions will conduct themselves admirably and I am extremely confident that our school will continue to be in good hands when we elect our Student Leaders for 2020.
Celebrating our Amazing Tuck-shop Ladies
Today is a day we recognise and thank our wonderful tuckshop ladies. Sal and Rach go above and beyond every single day to ensure our students and staff never go hungry. They prepare well thought out meal options and always have a smile on their faces. Today was an opportunity to allow us to show them how much they mean to us and to thank them for all they do.

Please see below a really easy recipe for a Gluten Free Zucchini Slice that is great for Lunch Boxes (and quite cheap to make as well)
Gluten Free Zucchini Slice
Ingredients
- 4 cups grated zucchini (put into a clean muslin cloth or clean chux cloth and squeeze out excess liquid)
- 400 grams corn kernels drain and rinsed
- 300 grams diced bacon
- 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese
- 3/4 cup cream
- 8 eggs
- Salt and Pepper to season
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200°c.
- Spray a baking tray with cooking oil.
- Cut the top and tail off the zucchini and use a food processor to grate the zucchini. Remember to place grated zucchini into a clean muslin cloth or clean chux cloth and squeeze out the excess liquid.
- Cover the base of the oiled baking tray with the grated zucchini (spread it out evenly).
- Sprinkle the corn over the zucchini layer.
- Top the corn with the bacon pieces.
- Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the bacon pieces.
- Use a fork to whisk eggs, add cream, salt and pepper until smooth.
- Pour egg mix over baking tray starting at one corner and moving around so that the liquid spreads out (slowly tilt to oneside to help spread the egg mixture).
- Place baking tray in the oven for 45 mins.
- Leave to cool slightly before cutting.

As you can see from the table –
Year 5 are studying a Musical Theatre unit, which will culminate in a Lip Sync Battle on Thursday the 5th of December at 11:30am. An invitation to all Year 5 carers and parents went out at the end of Term 3. We had a wonderful turnout last year and are hoping to see as many parents as possible on the day. Could students please start to bring in the costumes you will wear on the day? It would be wonderful if all items could have the student’s name on them. There are hanging racks in the Arts Room’s Costume cupboard.
Year 6 are continuing on their journey into Theatre Sports. The students are enjoying the competition on Thursdays at 1:15pm, which will culminate this Thursday – We started with 4 teams – 6 Emerald, 6 Onyx, 6 Gold and a teacher team. The Arts Room has been filled to the brim every Thursday, which is wonderful to see. The final is between 6 Gold and the Teacher team. Six Gold is keen to retain the trophy again this year! (Ms Kennon has held the trophy two years running) Can they make it three? We shall see on Thursday!

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER
Building Self Esteem
Self esteem is feeling good about yourself, liking yourself, feeling that you are a worthwhile person. For almost all parents there are times when you worry about your child’s self esteem. Self esteem enables them to try new things without too much fear of failing, to reach out and make friends, and to manage problems they are likely to meet along the way. Good self esteem builds a solid foundation for life.
An important part of self esteem is feeling that you have a place in the world where you belong – that you are part of a family where you matter.
What parents can do to help build self esteem
- Tell your child often that you love them and you are glad they are who they are
- Show you love them by spending time, listening to their point of view, being willing to help them achieve their goals eg. Drive them to sport, watch the game
- Support their learning – take an interest without taking over. Be involved in the school
- Encourage friendships and make their friends welcome, and get to know them
- Encourage hobbies or interests – a busy child is less likely to get into trouble
- Let your child assist you with something eg. Cooking, fixing the video
- Keep and cherish mementos of their success eg. Ribbons, trophies
- Help them to solve their problems themselves by talking through the issue, offering ideas or alternatives and helping them follow through.
All children need love and support. You are the most influential person in their life. How you support your child and the skills you teach them will affect them for the rest of their life. Parenting is not easy but it can be a most rewarding job when you see that the child you have reared is a happy, capable and caring person.

A WORD FROM OUR CHAPLAIN
Chappy Day Out
Monday 28th October was our annual Chappy Day Out hosted by CYC Burleigh. Students enjoyed lessons in surfing, a yummy lunch, and a ride on a Dragon boat.
Then to top off the fun in the sun we enjoyed yummy ice creams!!

Chappy’s Spare Change Challenge
Think you know what Chappy Rusty does here at Musgrave?? Well, think again, you probably don’t know the whole story…
Chappy Rusanne ‘Rusty’ Jourdan comes to our school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday every week to:
- Chat to people who need a friend
- Help students and their teachers in classrooms
- Meet with people to sort out friendship issues
- Play games and provide a happy space at break times
- Support people during challenging times
- Support families who need help
- Organise care packages for people in need
- Join in and lend a hand at our school events
What you also may not know is that Chappy Rusty’s position is only partly funded. So, for the next two weeks, we are running our annual fundraiser - “Chappy’s Spare Change Challenge” to help raise the money needed to keep up her important work in our community.
From the 4/11/19 (Monday Week 5) to the 15/11/10 (Friday Week 6) we are challenging students, parents, and school staff to bring in as many spare coins as they possibly can.
Each classroom will receive a jar to fill – multiple times if possible. Each Thursday the jars will be counted and the leaders announced at Meet & Greet. On Friday of Week 6, the winners will be announced. First prize is a pizza party, second prize is an ice block for the whole class from the tuckshop.
So, the challenge is on- it’s class against class! The last year’s winners were Prep Yellow. Can anyone beat them? Can your child’s class win the honour of ‘Chappy’s Champions 2019’?
