FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

2020 Enrolments-: Important

Welcome back to Term 4.

To ensure we have as accurate enrolment numbers as possible to start 2020, I have sent home a letter earlier this week requesting information about your child/ren’s schooling for 2020. Children who are returning to Musgrave Hill is just as important as those children who are not. If you are taking an extended holiday and will not be returning on day 1 of the school year, that information is also important to ensure we keep a place for your child/ren. I understand we all have very busy lives but by taking just a couple of minutes to complete this form it will make such an incredible difference to ensuring a smooth start to 2020. I thank you in advance for your support in this matter. Please return completed forms to your class teacher. If you have more than one child at the school then please return to the eldest child’s class teacher.

Day for Daniel and Stanger Danger

Friday 25th October is Day for Daniel here at Musgrave Hill. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation created Day for Daniel to help raise the awareness and importance of child safety within schools and their wider community. To support this worthy cause, students are encouraged to wear a plain red shirt to symbolize the foundations beliefs surrounding the prevention and awareness of child safety. As a whole school, we will be walking around the oval as a symbol of respect to this wonderful foundation.

It is also a great opportunity for families to start conversations. Travelling to school or other familiar places by themselves is an opportunity for children to develop confidence and new skills. Many children start travelling independently in primary school. Parents and carers can help their children make the move to independent travel by using a few simple safety tips.

Recognise, React and Report

When teaching travel safe skills it is important to remember the following general safety advice for children:

Recognise - What is happening around you? Are you safe?
React - What can you do if the situation is not safe?
Report - Tell an adult at home or school if something is not ok or you do not feel safe.

TUCKSHOP NEWS

Welcome back everyone I hope you had a great holiday. Guess what??? … The Slushee is back!!!!

Please remember all orders are to be placed via Qkr! App or over the counter each morning by 9.15am. If you do happen to forget your child’s lunch you can ring through to the tuckshop and order something and send in the money the following day.

Uniform News

We are still taking orders over the counter or via our Qkr! App for the Senior Shirts for 2020. Please remember to choose your sizes carefully as there are no refunds or returns.

The tuckshop/uniform shop will be open for the purchase of uniforms over the Christmas holidays on Wed 22nd January 2020 from 9am - 1pm and on Thursday 23rd January from 1pm - 5pm.

Recycling News

We are now asking all children to bring their empty poppers, water bottles and flavoured milk bottles to the tuckshop when they have finished with them. We will be exchanging these items for money that will go towards our school. Remember every little bit helps. Just for an example; we roughly sell 110 flavoured milks each week, so for the term we could possibly make $100 and that would equate to approximately $400 a year that we can put towards purchasing some great things. So remind your children to return these items to the tuckshop.

P&C News

Please note that the next P&C meeting will be on Thursday 14th November at 2.15pm in the staffroom.

NAIDOC

Jingeri Jimbelungs (Hello friends),

NAIDOC celebrations were embraced with gusto at the end of last term. The week started with an assembly, which included an Acknowledgement of Country and showcased dancers from Southport State High School. During the last 2 weeks of school we had students:

  • reading a locally written Indigenous story called Jukari: Saltwater Hero, based on a real life early Bundjalung lifesaver. (You can read about him here )
  • exploring Aboriginal and Torres Strait histories through a QR Code scavenger hunt around the school.
  • learning about totems of the Kombumerri People and expressing their understanding through art.
  • playing a range of Indigenous games.

The Barna Jarjum (Strong Children) team created a display in the library of school Indigenous resources, including some from the Dandiiri Schools and Community Library which is a valuable, statewide resource centre which showcases many aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education, culture and history. The display will be in the library until the end of Week 3, if you would like to see it. It also highlights the Year 6 art responses.

This term the school and Barna Jarjum team will be focusing on planning for next year to continue to embrace Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education, culture and history as part of the curriculum and supporting our students.

If you would like more information, please contact Annette Vlaanderen or Luke Kennelly, Indigenous Champions within the school.

We would like to acknowledge that the land on which we learn, work and play is the land of the Kombumerri people. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging. We would also like to further extend that respect to all present and their ancestors.

ALL ABILITIES ATHLETICS SPORTS DAY

On Thursday 5th September, a group of students were invited to attend an all abilities Athletics sports day at Runaway Bay. We arrived by bus and made our way into the stadium, where we quickly put our super hero outfits on and made our way down to the track for the March pass. The students then competed in their two races for the day, the 50m and 100m Dash.

Our students did a fantastic job, with all students getting a ribbon on the day. The students were then split into two teams and participated in games events such as, agility running, golf, cricket and tennis all run by the Gold Coast Sport and Rec helpers. It was an enormous day hosted by Gold Coast Sport and Recreation and we thank them for organising the day. We would also like to thank Mrs Leitch, Mrs Simpson and Mrs Jo for making the day possible as well as our families for coming along and supporting on the day.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 6 EMERALD

In 6 Emerald this term we extended our learning of measuring area, perimeter and volume of compound shapes by incorporating Minecraft Education Edition. Every student in 6 Emerald has a license to Minecraft Education Edition, this platform is used to foster the four C’s of 21st Century skills by promoting Creativity, Critical thinking, Collaboration, and Communication in addition to developing programming and computational thinking capabilities.

Students were tasked to form groups and create new additions to the school grounds that met specific dimension requirements. Each group then calculated the area and perimeter of their builds and posted their mathematical thinking as annotated screenshots on our class digital learning portfolio (Seesaw).

To further expand our learning beyond the four walls of the classroom, we exported our Minecraft builds as 3D models using dedicated structure blocks and projected our designs as Augmented Reality (AR) onto the school oval using the Mixed Reality Viewer in Windows 10. Minecraft has provided the students of 6 Emerald a safe, shared learning environment for engagement with virtual learning experiences allowing them to leverage technology to enhance expression of their acquired knowledge.

SAVER PLUS

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER

Teaching Tolerance

Today, more than ever, our children interact with people of differing ethnicities, religions, and cultures, and ability levels. Classrooms are increasingly diverse, and reflect the communities where families live and work.

The dictionary defines tolerance as `showing respect for the rights or opinions or practices of others`. In short it is about accepting people for who they are and treating others the way you would like to be treated. Tolerance is about respect shown by: accepting difference of opinion, of family and culture, of beliefs and religion, and most importantly, of habits.

Having tolerance not only improves our relationships with people but it also opens up more opportunities in education, business, and many other aspects of life.

Teaching Tolerance

Live it: Children develop their own values, in great part, by mirroring the values and attitudes of those they care about. Parents' attitudes about respecting others are often so much a part of them that they rarely even think about it. Parents who demonstrate tolerance and respect in their everyday lives give out a powerful message – I accept and respect your uniqueness. As a result, their kids learn to appreciate differences in others as well as themselves, as well as acknowledge and respect differences within their own family.

Talk about tolerance and respect: When media or life experiences present opportunities regarding tolerance or lack thereof, talk to your child about the values you would like them to exhibit. Answer kids' questions about differences honestly and respectfully. This teaches that it is acceptable to notice and discuss differences as long as it is done with respect. Point out and talk about unfair stereotypes that may be portrayed in media.

Remember that tolerance does not mean tolerating unacceptable behavior. It means that everyone deserves to be treated with respect — and in turn should treat others with respect as well.

Provide opportunities: Give them opportunities to play and work with others of diverse backgrounds. Children learn firsthand that everyone has something to contribute and we really aren’t that different in our thinking and living.

Select books, toys, music, art, and videos carefully. Keep in mind the powerful effect that the media and pop culture have on shaping attitudes.

Build self-esteem: Help your children feel good about themselves. Kids who feel badly about themselves often treat others badly. Kids with strong self-esteem value and respect themselves and are more likely to treat others with respect, too. Help your child to feel accepted, respected, and valued.

Learn about traditions: Learn together about holiday and religious celebrations that are not part of your own tradition.

Honor your family's traditions and teach them to your kids — and to someone outside the family who wants to learn about the diversity you have to offer.

When parents encourage a tolerant attitude in their children, and talk about their values, and model the behavior they would like to see by treating others well, kids will follow in their footsteps.

If we all could take on board that:

‘EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT
EVERYBODY IS SPECIAL

EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT’ the world would be a better place.
