FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Welcome back to what I know will be another amazing term.
Musgrave Hill State School Review
Approximately a quarter of all Queensland state schools are reviewed by the Department each year. The reviews are an important part of how the department monitors and supports schools. The reviews are about providing schools with quality and independent feedback tailored to the school’s context and needs. Each school is reviewed every four years, providing valuable opportunities for self-reflection and improvement. The reviews are conducted by the department’s School Improvement Unit (SIU). Reviews are undertaken by experienced educators trained in the use of the National School Improvement Tool (NSIT), a nationally recognised framework for reviewing teaching and learning practices.
Musgrave’s review is scheduled to take place on Friday 11th, Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th October 2019. There will be three reviewers assigned to our school and they will look closely at our school’s performance data and speak with a wide range of staff, students, parents and community members to get an accurate picture of the school.
I will provide more information closer to the date.
Teacher Industrial Action
I am happy to say that the Teachers’ Union and Education Queensland have in principle agreed to an enterprise bargaining offer over the holiday period. This offer still needs to go to a vote of union members, however the industrial action which was flagged for last Thursday was called off therefore it was business as usual.
Before and After school
I have had a few questions regarding the use of playgrounds before and after school. To clarify any misunderstandings, our playgrounds have always been out of bounds to students before and after school even if supervised by a parent. This is for the safety and equity of all students. I have always stated that we would rather students arrive closer to the 8.40am bell and only because students’ safety is our highest priority we have allocated staff to supervise students in designated areas if they arrive prior to this time. I hope that has addressed some of the questions that have been circulating of late. Please don’t hesitate to contact the Deputy Principal of your child’s area or myself if you require further information.
School Opinion Survey
It is that time again, when parents/caregivers, school staff and senior students will be given the opportunity to participate in this year’s School Opinion Survey. Access details and a letter explaining the process will be sent home via the eldest in the family to parents/caregivers. Staff and students will complete their surveys over the coming weeks. The online survey opens on the 29th July and will remain open until the 23rd August. We value your feedback so if you have the time please have your say.
ATTENDANCE - Attendance = Success
At Musgrave Hill State School, our goal is to have a daily attendance rate of 95% and above in each year level, as you can see below from the Semester One 2019 percentages, we are falling way short of our targets in all year levels. We must continue to make Every Day Count so please send your children to school.

A Visit from the Titans
On Thursday 18th July, we had a very special visit from two of the Titans big name players. The Titans have a very strong association with and proudly support Down Syndrome Qld. They were here to present one of our Year 2 student (Kyan Newshaw) with a special player’s shirt that he wore when he ran out with the team last Sunday. It was a very exciting time for Kyan and his face says it all. Musgrave is extremely proud, well done Kyan.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 4 PINK
Term 3 is off to an exciting start as our class explores contact and non-contact forces in Science. This term we will be learning about applied forces such as ‘push and pull’ forces, gravity, friction, magnetism and air resistance. We will be using our knowledge of forces to create and construct our own games using cardboard and craft resources.
Last week we played a game that used applied forces called “Whack It Out”. The objective of the game was to get a ping-pong ball into a cup by quickly removing the paper plate, we examined the combination of applied force and gravity that worked together to make this game successful.
Kiana and Josie play “Whack It Out” in Science
During term 2 we wrote an information report about the Mary River Turtle. We learnt a lot about this interesting native Australian animal and demonstrated our understanding through art.
