Newsletter Articles

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

As this is the last newsletter for the term, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for all your support and your resolute commitment to our school. Sustaining strong partnerships between home and school is vital to the success of any school and we are extremely fortunate to have very positive relationships with our school community. This relationship has definitely been on show recently with the amazing number of families attending last Friday’s Sports Day and all who have attended our Poetry Café sessions this week.

Sports Day

Friday the 21st June was our annual Athletics Carnival and what an amazing spectacular it was. From the opening March Past performances to the Staff v Students relay it certainly was a day to be remembered.

Koala took out the March Past honours this year and Dolphin were the overall champion house. Both Staff relay teams took out first place but it is certainly getting harder each year. More information and individual achievements will be listed below in Katie’s Sport Talk section.

Events like this do not happen without the support and involvement of many, so a big thankyou to the Musgrave Community.

Filming of Students at School Events

As we have had a number of big community events occurring at the school of late, I feel it is important to remind everyone about the protocols around the filming of students. Our school supports that parents will take footage of their children participating in school events for personal record. Parents need to be aware that some families and students have legitimate reasons for prohibiting their child’s image to be taken or published. Parents should be mindful that the publication of images, including by social media, requires the permission of all parties; students, parents, staff and other people who may appear in the images.

Tips for Discussing Your Child’s Report Card

A report card is one way teachers communicate with parents and students. The report card is the teacher’s appraisal of the student’s work for the past semester. The following tips may be helpful to parents in discussing their child’s report card with them.

Meet privately with your child, without distractions. Be sure you have enough time.

Your child deserves your attention without interruptions. Be sure you allow enough time for a relaxed discussion.

Start with a review of what your child has learned in each subject.

Ask your child to tell you about the activity in each subject and what they have learned. Be positive and calm. Remember, a “C” rating in a subject area means your child is achieving at their year level standard.

Discuss with your child their goals for the next semester.

Are the goals reasonable and challenging?

Help your child plan his or her next steps.

Should you talk with the teacher to discuss concerns, or ask for the teacher’s suggestions? Are changes needed in your child’s study habits at home? Is your child interested in learning more about certain topics?

Prep Enrolments

If you have a child that is eligible for Prep in 2020 and have not yet enrolled, please contact our office immediately to ensure a placement as our Prep classes are Filling Fast. Our Prep interviews are commencing very shortly hence the importance of having all information and enrolment documents. If you are aware of families that have Prep aged children for 2020 can you pass on this information to them. We do not want any families disappointed.

School resumes on Monday 15th July. Please ensure everyone has a relaxing and enjoyable break.

NAIDOC

Jingeri Jimbelungs (Hello friends),

Musgrave Hill State School is committed to working together for a shared future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in our community. With the national NAIDOC Week celebrations happening in the school holidays, we have decided to celebrate our week in Term 3-Week 9.

“NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community” (taken from the NAIDOC website).

This year MHSS has established an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander School team, with two Indigenous Champions. These Champions are staff who represent the school at regional and cluster events and professional development. They are advocates for promoting Indigenous perspectives across the school and supporting our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community. As part of this support, we invite our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members to help us to develop the direction Indigenous perspectives take in our community and will be hosting an introduction afternoon tea early next term. A letter will be sent home with further information in Week 10.

Students will also be involved in developing our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander directions through participation in a number of different events throughout the rest of the year. The first of these, Deadly Choices, happened in Term 2 with students from Year 4-6.

Please contact the school for further information.

Musgrave Hill State School acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands from across Queensland. We pay our respects to the Elders past, present and emerging, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the state.
