Newsletter Articles
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
As this is the last newsletter for Term 1, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our parents for their continued support. Partnership between the school and the home leads to maximum engagement and outcomes for students. I look forward to continuing this work in Term Two and beyond. I wish everyone a happy and safe Easter break. I hope the pace of day to day routine slows down to allow you all to enjoy extra family time. School resumes on Tuesday 23rd April. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at school and on time. Remember the first week back is a short week, with Monday 22nd April and Thursday 25th April being public holidays.
ANZAC Day Ceremonies
ANZAC Day now goes way beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day we remember all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of ANZAC, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.
We will be conducting our ceremonies on Wednesday 24th April. As per previous years we will have two ceremonies, one for Year 3 to 6 students and one for the Prep to 2 students. I want to take this opportunity to remind parents that the protocols we respect and adhere to during these ceremonies require no applause at any stage. This can be difficult when there are performances by students and guest speakers but it is important to ensure these protocols are upheld throughout the entire service.

Cross Country and Fun Run
Friday 22nd of March, Musgrave Hill students competed in our annual Cross Country and Fun Run event. It was a very hot and humid morning but everyone who participated did an amazing job in tough conditions. I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank Katie Halsall for the great job she did organising what can only be described as one very successful Cross Country/Fun Run. A big thank you to all our staff who assisted on the day, your efforts certainly ensured that the event ran extremely smoothly. Another great turn out by our community and I thank all those who supported this event.
NAPLAN
Next term, students in Years 3 and 5 will take part in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests. These tests are designed to give a point in time snapshot of a child’s progress and are an important tool for comparing this progress with peers within the school, across the State and also across Australia. If you have any concerns regarding these tests or wish to find out further information concerning your child and the implementation of NAPLAN, please contact your Class Teacher or Deputy Principal for an appointment.
Jump Start Skipping Program
At Meet and greet last Wednesday we had Luke Boon come and perform for the students to promote a great opportunity he is offering our students here at Musgrave. Luke is a 28 time World Champion of skipping and the program and associate cost are on the flyer below. Luke is very happy to offer alternative payment methods so if parents are interested in getting their children involved in this program you can contact Luke on 0422855460 or luke@jumpforceint.com. Luke will revisit our school early next term where he will distribute the official flyer.
At School Way Too Early
We are starting to get some students arriving at school way before they should. All students and parents/carers who come to school between 8.00am and 8:40am MUST go to the undercover area near the hall. No students (whether they are with parents/carers or not) are to wait at classrooms or play on playgrounds or in undercover areas. At 8:00am we have staff on duty to supervise students, please do not drop your children off or send them to school before 8:00am. Students will not be supervised prior to this and should be attending some form of before school care.
Staff Carpark
Please note that the staff carpark near the Prep area is not a walk way. After the holidays this area is being converted into an addition play space and it will continue to be a No Pedestrian access I appeal to you and for the safety of students to please observe the signs and access the school via the appropriate entrances.
Have a safe and relaxing Easter Break and we will do it all again in Term 2. School resumes on Tuesday 23rd April.

WHAT’S HAPPENING
School Fundraiser
I cannot begin to express my gratitude for the support and the absolute and overwhelming generosity shown by our school community towards our fundraiser. I know I have been at times intense and a little crazy, but we have done it – we have reached our goal of a whopping $20,000! This will be a significant contribution towards a new playground for our children and we have all of you to thank! This would not be possible without the support of families and friends and for that, I am truly grateful. Please note, a final tally will be announced along with the Overall Champion Class Fundraisers, the Challenge Class Winners, the Top 10 Individual Fundraisers and the Winner of the Hover Board as soon as all money has been tallied. Amazingly, the tally continues to rise! I am hopeful that these announcements will be made within the first 2 weeks back in Term 2. I thank you for your patience with this process. We are dealing with a large sum of money, all entries need to be catered for, and prizes nominated before the prizes can arrive at school. Your child/children will be notified as soon as the prizes arrive.
Local Matters at Grill’d!!
Please note that next month and for the whole of April, Musgrave Hill SS has been selected to appear on the jars in our local Grill’d Restaurant at Harbour Town. Spread the news, the jar with the most tokens brings back $300 to their chosen project – ours is our new playground! So be sure to pop on down to our local Grill’d, grab a delicious burger, pop the token in our jar and don’t forget to say hello to Lachlan – one of our very own ex-students, now managing the store!
You’ll find us on a jar at Grill’d Harbour Town, Harbour Town Shopping Centre Gold Coast Hwy (corner Oxley Drive) Biggera Waters.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS
As Term 1 draws to a close, we would like to say thank you and congratulations to all the band and strings students who have achieved great things in music this term.
Our school band performed at senior assembly in week 9 and did a marvellous job. Teachers and parents gave very positive feedback on how well they sounded and how well they presented themselves on stage throughout the assembly.
Our continuing and beginning band and string students have made good progress and we want to capitalise on their achievements and continue the momentum in Term 2. We encourage all our Instrumental Music students to take their instruments home during the term break and continue to enjoy playing them whenever they get an opportunity.
Lessons starting in Term 2
Instrumental Music lessons will continue in Term 2 with strings starting on Friday 26 April and band rehearsals and lessons starting on Monday 29 April. Always remember to bring instruments, method book and music folder.
Please check your respective timetables to make sure you have the correct day and time. Timetables are located on the Arts/Music Block window beside the entrance and all relevant classrooms will have a copy. Students and parents can request a printed or digital copy of their current IM timetable at any time throughout the term.
Welcome Mr Rea
Musgrave Hill SS welcomes Mr Tony Rea as our Instrumental Music (Band) teacher during Term 2. Mr Rea will replace Mr Denning who will be on leave and will return in Term 3.
Do you have any questions regarding the Instrumental Music Program at Musgrave Hill? Please contact Mr Rea, Miss Williams or Administration.
Have a safe term break!
Mr Denning, Miss Williams and Mr Rea
Drum Club
Drum Club has been organised to give as many students at Musgrave Hill an opportunity to participate in a percussion based ensemble and learn basic drumming and music reading skills in a fun but disciplined and inclusive environment.
Drum Club is available to all students in years 4, 5 and 6 who are not currently in the Instrumental Music Program but are keen to participate and agree to abide by the rules of Drum Club.
Places in Drum Club are limited. Students do not need to audition. No prior music experience is necessary. Students only need to complete and the Drum Club enrolment form and return it to the Music room or to Administration.
Enrolment Forms for Drum Club are available from the Arts/Music room or from Administration.
There is no cost to participate in Drum Club. Drums, practice drums, drum sticks, mallets and music are provided.
Drum Club meets on a Monday in The Arts/Music Room at 1.15pm for 30 minutes from week 2 until week 9 during term time unless indicated otherwise.
Come along and join Drum Club in Term 2.

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER
Parent Hot Spot 3: Managing Angry Feelings
Last newsletter I wrote about helping our children manage strong emotions. Our children learn most from watching how we handle our own emotions. Often the emotion we find most difficult to deal with in ourselves and our kids, is anger. Anger is often viewed as a ‘bad’ feeling, one we should not feel. But remember a feeling is a feeling, neither good nor bad. Angry feelings are actually important because they tell us something is wrong that needs to be worked out!
It is the behaviour that comes from angry feelings that can be determined as good (desirable, acceptable) or bad (undesirable, unacceptable). It is important we make the difference between feelings and behaviour clear to our children. The message we need to get across in our families is this:
‘It is o.k. to feel angry but it is not okay to hurt people, yourself or things, when we are feeling angry.’
Expressing our anger in hurtful, destructive or violent ways does not help us deal with the feelings and the situation that made us feel angry in the first place. Some things to model and encourage our kids to do are:
- Acknowledge when we are feeling angry to ourselves.
- It is likely that we will have to go and calm down a little first before we can deal with the situation in a rational manner. Finding things that help us cool down a little is important as we cannot expect someone to listen to us if we are likely to become abusive or aggressive. Calming things may be going to another room, lying down, listening to music, having a drink, going for a run, etc.
- Try to talk to the person concerned using an “I” statement i.e. Start with the words “I feel angry when…” This is less threatening then starting with “You make me feel angry when..” Tell them what it is that you want to change. Pick a time when the person you are cranky with seems calm and ready to listen.
You still may not be able to get things the way you want them but you will have communicated your feelings and over time the other person may be able to see things from your viewpoint and be ready to negotiate.
