FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Remembrance Day

Last Sunday, 11 November 2018 marked 100 years since the end of World War 1. This conflict raged not only across Europe, but also engulfed different theatres throughout the world.

It was a good time to pause, reflect and consider the work and sacrifice that our servicemen and women give to ensure our safety and freedom. The First World War was also the first time that the young nation of Australia sent soldiers to war. It was during these conflicts that the tradition of the ANZAC spirit was born.

On this very special 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1, these 3 amazing students proudly represented our school at the Remembrance Day Service at the Broadwater.

Major Works at Musgrave

We are extremely fortunate to be able to upgrade one of our buildings (D Block). With this upgrade however does come some disruptions with work scheduled to begin on Saturday 1st of December. During the construction phase no classes are permitted on the work sites so our Year 3’s and I Jade will be relocated to other classrooms for the last two weeks of the term. More information regarding this move will be provided to the parents of the affected classes in the coming weeks.

Tuckshop Day

Friday 2nd November was the official celebration of Tuckshop Day. We are extremely fortunate here at Musgrave to have Sally Grassick as our tuckshop convenor, Rachele White as her trusty off sider and some other wonderful people who volunteer their time in the tuckshop and when we have big events. Our tuckshop offers busy families an easy and healthy alternative when considering lunch menus for their child/ren.

On the Friday at Meet and Greet the ladies were shown just how much they are appreciated with a very special performance of “Simply the Best”. So a big thank you to our tuckshop ladies - you are definitely the best.

Parents on School Grounds

I just want to say a big thank you to the majority of parents who have supported the 2.40pm arrival time. As I have said many times the well-being and safety of the students here at Musgrave is my highest priority and I truly thank you for also making it yours. For those parents who may have missed the letter that was sent home, just a friendly reminder that unless you are attending a scheduled school activity or meeting, or collecting your child/ren after you have signed them out through the office, that you do not enter the school grounds until the end of the school day at 2.40pm. Once you have collected your child/ren, I ask that you please exit the school grounds by 3.15pm.

Report Cards

As in previous years your child/ren’s final report card will be emailed home on Wednesday of Week 10 (12th December). It has been reported to me that a number of service providers see the report card mail as spam, causing the email with the report card to be delivered into people’s junk/spam folder rather than their inbox. Please add OneSchool.application@dete.qld.gov.au to your ‘safe senders list’ so your child’s Semester 2 report card will be delivered to your inbox at the end of the term.

If the email address on your enrolment form has changed, please let the office know by Friday 30th November. Changes received after this date may mean that your child’s report card is not delivered on time. Provisions will be made for those families who do not have access to the internet.

Class Placements for 2019

In December we will be creating our classes for 2019 and as per previous years a letter will be sent home to parents advising of their child’s new class and location. Please note teachers will not be allocated to a class on the information letter sent home to parents. On the first day of school all class lists, teachers assigned to the classes and locations will be displayed outside the office and outside the hall.

Christmas Concert

Musgrave is holding our traditional Christmas Concert a little differently this year. The concert will commence at 1.15pm Monday 10th December and will concluded at 2.50pm. We are hoping to see as many families as possible come and join our celebrations that afternoon.

STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME (SRS) 2019

You are invited to join the Student Resource Scheme (SRS) for 2019. From 1 January 2012, the scheme has operated under the policy and guidelines of the Department of Education and Training FNM-PR-018: Student Resource Scheme. The scheme is still supported and approved annually by the School’s Parent and Citizens Association (P&C), is still managed by the school and still operates in accordance with Section 51 of the Education (General Provision) Act 2006.

Student Resource Scheme 2019

The Resources Scheme has again remained at a reasonable $130.00. We can achieve this pricing if we can get all our families participating.

The scheme is voluntary and you are under no obligation to join. However, please be aware that books, materials and consumables required under the scheme are not funded by school grants. Therefore if you do not wish to join the scheme you are still responsible for providing your child with the items that would otherwise have been provided by the scheme to enable your child to engage with the curriculum.

As technology is now an essential part of student learning the school can access programs such as Mathletics and Reading Eggs at a special bulk pricing. If you choose not to participate it will be the parents’ responsibility to purchase individual access to these programs.

The provision of this scheme ensures that well-resourced learning by our students remains our key focus. The scheme is not a fundraiser for the school. Its purpose is to provide you, the parent, with a cost effective, value for money alternative to purchasing textbooks, technology access, resources, consumables and materials elsewhere, through the school’s bulk purchasing process. Fees are paid directly into the child’s classroom account to buy essential resources and materials used in his/her classroom.

Please find attached the SRS Form to be completed and return to the school office with payment by the 30/11/2018.

SPORTS TALK

Run Club

The last Run Club session for 2018 will be 8am, Thursday 22nd November (week 7). Results for the year will then be collated and presentations will be made the following week at Meet and Greet for the overall winning class and most laps run for females and males for 2018. I will also be updating class teachers with a list of the badges that each child has earned and is entitled to purchase. A reminder that the Run Club Badges are $3 and can be purchased from the school tuckshop. It’s fantastic to see these badges on hats at lunchtime, they look amazing and certainly shine a light on some outstanding running achievements!

Prep to Year 3 Swimming

You should have received a letter this week with a timetable on it for swimming in weeks 8 and 9. If you haven’t received it, please ask your classroom teacher for a copy. Please take note of the schedule and I thank those parents in advance for having your child/children to school on time to ensure the program can run smoothly.

YEAR 1 GRANDPARENTS AFTERNOON

On the 25th October all the year ones had their Grandparents/special friend’s afternoon in the hall. We had a lovely afternoon doing activities together and sharing an afternoon tea. It was great to see so many grandparents turn up and share this special afternoon with their grandchild. Thanks also to 5 Ruby for being special friends to those year 1 children who couldn’t have their grandparent attend. The children really enjoyed doing art and craft, reading, construction and games with their grandparent or special friend.

TUCKSHOP NEWS

Last Friday was Tuckshop Lady Day. Rachele White and I were both so spoilt and grateful for the special “Simply the Best Song’ performed by Mrs H and the Year 5’s, the standing ovation of appreciation, the gifts, the flowers, high fives, hugs and more importantly the smiling faces we received all day. We love Musgrave and we love coming to work every day.

Just recently the 2018 Queensland Tuckshop of the Year Awards were held, unfortunately we didn’t win (there is always next year) but our lovely volunteer Rachele White came away with the ‘Tuckshop Volunteer of the Year Special Commendation’. We are so proud of her and even more grateful for all her hard work.

We have some exciting days coming up in our Tuckshop.

Our first is next Friday 23rd November at big lunch only, we will be having a sweet treats special. There will be fairy bread, chocolate crackles, honey joys, slices, rainbow cookies, cakes and much more. Prices will start from 50c, so remember to bring some change on that day to get a yummy surprise.

Important closure dates:

5th December from 8:15am-11:15am

The tuckshop is closed for Prep Orientation Morning but will be open for big lunch orders. We will be open at little lunch for ice blocks, drinks and chips only.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 3 NAVY

In 3 Navy we love to perform! On Monday 19th November our class, alongside 3 Purple, will be performing an assembly item focusing on the important issue of Bullying. We wanted to send a strong message to our school community that bullying is not tolerated and we need to stand up for ourselves and our peers. Over the year we have learnt to respect each other and value our differences.

Not only are we amazing performers on stage, we are also working on our performance skills in class. We have been reading the novel Charlotte’s Web and have been focusing on the personality traits of each character.

The students have been writing and performing various spoken procedures in character from the story. They have been learning how to project their voices, make eye contact with their audience, use hand gestures and include humour in their presentations to engage their audience.

In mathematics, we have covered a variety of topics this term including angles, time and volume & capacity. 3 Navy are currently completing a range of hands on activities in class to measure, estimate and compare the capacity and volume of different containers.

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER

TEACHING TOLERANCE

The dictionary defines tolerance as `showing respect for the rights or opinions or practices of others`. In short it is about accepting people for who they are and treating others the way you would like to be treated. Today, more than ever, our children interact with people of differing ethnicities, religions, cultures, and ability levels. Classrooms are increasingly diverse, and reflect the communities where families live and work. Having tolerance not only improves our relationships with people but it also opens up more opportunities in education, business, and many other aspects of life.

Teaching Tolerance

Live it: Children develop their own values, in great part, by mirroring the values and attitudes of those they care about. Parents' attitudes about respecting others are often so much a part of them that they rarely even think about it. Parents who demonstrate tolerance and respect in their everyday lives give out a powerful message – I accept and respect your uniqueness. As a result, their kids learn to appreciate differences in others as well as themselves, as well as acknowledge and respect differences within their own family.

Talk about tolerance and respect: When media or life experiences present opportunities regarding tolerance or lack thereof, talk to your child about the values you would like them to exhibit. Answer kids' questions about differences honestly and respectfully. This teaches that it is acceptable to notice and discuss differences as long as it is done with respect. Point out and talk about unfair stereotypes that may be portrayed in media.

Remember that tolerance does not mean tolerating unacceptable behavior. It means that everyone deserves to be treated with respect — and in turn should treat others with respect as well.

Provide opportunities: Give them opportunities to play and work with others of diverse backgrounds. Children learn firsthand that everyone has something to contribute and we really aren’t that different in our thinking and living.

Select books, toys, music, art, and videos carefully. Keep in mind the powerful effect that the media and pop culture have on shaping attitudes.

Build self-esteem: Help your children feel good about themselves. Kids who feel badly about themselves often treat others badly. Kids with strong self-esteem value and respect themselves and are more likely to treat others with respect, too. Help your child to feel accepted, respected, and valued.

Learn about traditions: Learn together about holiday and religious celebrations that are not part of your own tradition.

Honor your family's traditions and teach them to your kids — and to someone outside the family who wants to learn about the diversity you have to offer.

When parents encourage a tolerant attitude in their children, and talk about their values, and model the behavior they would like to see by treating others well, kids will follow in their footsteps.

If we all could take on board that:

‘EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT
EVERYBODY IS SPECIAL
EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT’

The world would be a better place.
