WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Book Week: Musgrave Hill Read-a-thon 2018

Congratulations Musgrave students on another successful Read-a-thon. The Read-a-thon aimed to challenge readers to set aside time to read each day. This initiative during Book Week helps to promote reading and literacy in all student's lives and further strengthen reading abilities across our school.

Well done to all students and families who were actively involved. The Year 2 cohort stood out amongst the year levels as the most enthusiastic readers. The challenge required students to record the amount of books or chapters read both at home and in class. Individuals and classes then submitted their tallies and totals were added together to beat our School Goal of 2000 texts. We successfully surpassed this reaching the total of 3811 texts from Prep to Year 6.

2 Mauve achieved the highest overall total of all the classes and enjoyed an ice-block party to celebrate this great achievement. Keep up the wonderful reading Musgrave!

School Support Staff Recognition Week 2018

August 27 - 31 was School Support Staff Recognition Week. School support staff are vital to our school. They provide invaluable support to all of the staff, parents and students. Sheryl, Liz, Deb, Janette and Paul are the ‘face’ of our school, welcoming all visitors with a smile and demonstrate what Musgrave Hill SS is all about. We thank the ladies for their commitment to our school each and every day.

Head Lice

Head lice have been detected in the school. We ask that all families check their child’s hair TODAY as this will help to eradicate them from our school. Keep checking every family members hair every second day for ten consecutive days until there are no head lice remaining.

Transmission:

Head lice do not jump or fly. They are spread mainly by direct head to head contact. They have strong claws and move by swinging from hair to hair. This can happen when people play, cuddle or work closely together. Also by students sharing school hats.

Head lice are a very common problem in schools and institutions everywhere in the world. Anyone can get head lice. They affect all socioeconomic groups and are not a sign of poor hygiene. They have no preference for ethnic background, hair colour, hair type or age.

Detection of head lice:

All parents should check their children and other family members for head lice regularly as early detection decreases treatment time and helps break the breeding cycle.

The most effective way to detect head lice is by using the hair conditioner and combing method. You will need white coloured hair conditioner, an ordinary comb, a fine tooth head lice comb and white tissue/kitchen paper towel.

  • Apply sufficient white conditioner to dry hair to completely cover the scalp and hair from roots to tips.
  • Use an ordinary comb to detangle hair and evenly distribute the conditioner. Divide the hair into four sections.
  • Comb hair from root to tips using a fine tooth head lice comb.
  • After each stroke, wipe the comb onto a white tissue, checking the comb and tissue for head lice.
  • Comb the whole head, checking for lice.
  • Put all tissues in a plastic bag, tie the top and put the bag in a rubbish bin.

All members of the family/household should be checked once per week using this method as long as infestation remains within the household.

Prevention:

The following actions can be taken to help prevent infestation/re-infestation:

  • Avoid head to head contact with other persons.
  • Keep long hair tied back or in plaits, especially at school.
  • Do not share brushes, combs, or pillows.
  • Wash combs and hair brushes after each use (60 Degrees Celsius for 30 seconds).
  • Pillow cases of persons known to be infested should be washed daily on hot cycle or put in the clothes dryer for 15 minutes.
  • Treat all household members whose head lice have been detected.
  • Notify your school so that others can be alerted to the problem and can check for head lice and arrange treatment if necessary.

NRL Excursion

On Thursday 30th of August, our Open Boys Competitive Rugby League Team had a great gala day against 5 other schools from the Gold Coast. Our boys showed incredible teamwork, support to each other and determination as they played each game. We had a fantastic day and Mr Bird was very proud of all of the boy's sportsmanship and Musgrave spirit.

Father’s Day

Last Thursday morning our Preps hosted a Father’s Day breakfast. It was a true celebration of our fathers and just how appreciative of them we are. We were welcomed by a large number of fathers, grandfathers, carers and uncles on the day and it was wonderful to see our Prep students buttering toast, fixing coffees and introducing their special someone to staff and other students. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful community that will engage and support all school events. Happy Father’s Day to all our wonderful fathers and we hope you were all spoilt on Sunday.

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER

All about Worrying- 3 steps to stop worrying

Everybody worries. Grown-ups do it and kids do it, too. But what should you do about it? Whether your worries are big or small, you can take these 3 steps:

  1. Try to figure out what you're worried about.
  2. Think about ways to make the situation better.
  3. Ask for help.

1. Figure it out.

Sometimes, you will know exactly what you're worried about. Other times, you might not know exactly what's bugging you. Let's say you're worried about a teacher who seems mean. But maybe what's really bothering you is that you're having trouble with math. If you get some help with math, that teacher might seem just fine.

Some problems, like family problems, are big and have a lot of parts. That can make it tough to zero in what the problem is or to pick one part of the problem to try to solve. But being able to focus on your problem — or at least part of it — is the first step to taking action. If you're having trouble figuring out what worries you, skip to Step 3 and get some help from a parent or another person you trust.

2. Think of ways to make it better.

There is almost always something you can do to help you feel less worried. Sitting there worrying is no fun and it probably won't solve your problem. But switching to an action mode can help you feel more hopeful.

If your worry is about a fight you had with a friend, you might write down all the actions you could take — from writing the friend a note to inviting him or her over for a game of basketball. Should you apologize for whatever happened between the two of you? Once you have a list of possible actions, you can select the one you think is most likely to get your friendship back on track.

But what if you can't think of anything to do to make your particular problem better? Then it's time to jump to Step 3 (it's the next step anyway) and ask someone for help.

3. Ask for help.

Worrying can make you feel lonely. When you're worried, it can help to find someone to talk to. Sometimes people say, "Why should I bother? He/she can't do anything about it." But here are two reasons to give it a shot anyway:

  1. You don't know for sure that no one can help until you share your feelings and let the person try to help.
  2. Just the act of telling someone what's bothering you can make you feel a little better. Afterward, you are no longer alone with your worries and whomever you told (parent, sister, brother, friend, counselor) is now thinking about ways to help you.

A Final Word about Worry

Did you know worry is not all bad? If you weren't worried (at least a little) about that test, you might not study for it. And if you weren't worried about getting sunburned, you might not wear your sunscreen.

But some kids worry so much that it keeps them from doing the stuff they need and want to do. If that sounds like you, you know what to do by now: Turn to good old Step 3 and ask someone for help.
