FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Sports Day

Friday the 27th July was our annual Athletics Carnival and what an amazing spectacle it was. From the opening March Past performances to the Staff v Students relay it was a day to be remembered. The House spirit that was on display was truly inspiring but more importantly than this was the phenomenal sportsmanship shown by all, this certainly makes me one very proud Principal. The overall team results plus the individual achievements are listed below in Katie’s Sport Talk section. I also would like to take a moment to thank Katie H for all her hard work over the past couple of months to ensure the day went off without a hitch. I would also like to thank the many people who have assisted Katie over that time and in particular on the day itself. Events like this don’t happen without the support and involvement of many, so a big thankyou to the Musgrave Community.

Police Visit and Cyber Safety Talk

Protecting our children and ourselves in this social network world is becoming more difficult and horror stories appear daily in the news. So as a proactive response to this, Senior Constable Tracey Clouston is visiting our school to talk with our Year 5 and 6 students about Cyber Safety. This will take place on Thursday 16th August. To help support your child navigate the continual pressures associated with social media and to help reduce this threat, it is vital we educate our children around the dangers of posting any photos. Ensure that your child’s computer is in a “public place” in your house (not in their bedrooms) and have them leave their mobiles on the kitchen table when they go to bed at night or even before. It is very important to note that age restrictions for Social Media Platforms are in place for very good reasons. I have attached information regarding these ages and encourage parents to ensure they are followed for the safety of our students.

Prep Enrolments

If you have a child that is eligible for Prep in 2019 and have not yet enrolled please contact our office immediately to ensure a placement as our Prep classes are Filling Fast. Our Prep interviews are commencing very shortly hence the importance of having all information and enrolment documents. If you are aware of families that have Prep aged children for 2019 can you pass on this information to them. We do not want any families disappointed.

School Opinion Survey

As mentioned in the last newsletter every year Education Queensland conduct a School Opinion Survey. The eldest in the family should have brought home a letter with clear instructions on how to complete the survey. The survey is completely confidential with a one-use code for completing the survey on line. Your opinion matters so please take the time to have your say. The survey will be available until the 24th August.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 4 PINK

Our class is off to a fun-filled, hands-on start to our second semester. This Term we’ve been busy learning all about sustainability with an emphasis on plastic pollution. Our Geography focus explores the inquiry question, “How is waste managed in our school community?” During Science this term, we are examining Natural & Processed Resources, and exploring how processed materials are made, recycled and reused.

Our Inquiry: The Great Rubbish Sort

As a class we collected litter found in our playground, we took this litter back to our class and sorted it based on the physical properties we learnt about in Science. What we discovered is that the majority of litter found on school grounds is soft plastic in the form of chip packets and straw sleeves. As we continue this inquiry we will be exploring ways our school can improve our waste management and help reduce litter in the playground.

Science and Technology Project: Operation Sustainable

To celebrate our Term 3 focus we commenced working on several class projects that help consolidate our understanding of sustainability with concrete real-world applications; our first project is a recycled drink bottle planter– we have commenced the first phase of repurposing plastic bottles to house the succulents we are sustainably propagating in class. As a class we designed our product, cut our bottle to our required specifications, sanded them back and painted a base coat ready for decorating later in the term.

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER

Here are some practical ideas to help you make sure your child eats healthy foods and develops healthy eating habits – now and in the future.

Healthy eating habits for your child

You might worry about whether your child is eating enough. Or you might be worried that your child is eating too much and going over a healthy weight. As a parent you give your child healthy food and opportunities to eat it. It’s up to your child to decide how much to eat – or whether to eat at all. It’s normal for children’s appetites to change from day to day. One day your child might want to eat a lot – just make sure that you fill them up with healthy food. Another day they might not want to eat. Try not to worry, because they will probably make up for it at the next meal or even the next day. If your child doesn’t want to eat, try not to force them or offer food rewards. Forcing them to eat teaches them not to listen to their appetite.

The most powerful way to send healthy food messages to your children is by letting them see you make healthy eating choices every day. Children will want to do what they see you doing.

‘Tummy talk’ and healthy eating

Understanding the way your child’s tummy ‘talks’ to their brain can help you deal with worries about your child undereating or overeating. Your child’s brain realises their tummy is full only about 20 minutes after the food hits the tummy. Also, your child’s hunger is partly determined by their ‘tummy clock’ – how much they ate yesterday at the same time. Offering meals at regular times encourages an appetite at regular times. You can use this to set up a healthy eating routine.

Overeating

If you’re concerned that your child has a tendency to overeat, here are some things to try:

  • Offer a slightly smaller portion of food. If your child finishes it, you can offer a small second helping. This gives your child’s brain and tummy a chance to catch up.
  • If your child doesn’t eat part of the meal – for example, the vegies – this is their choice. It isn’t a good idea to offer extra serves of other food – for example, meat – to make up for missing vegies.
  • Serve your child’s food on a smaller plate. This way they get the right-sized portion but still gets a ‘full plate’ of food.

Undereating

If you feel your child doesn’t eat enough at mealtimes or doesn’t have an appetite, you could try the following strategies:

  • Offer food around the same times each day. If children eat at regular mealtimes, they’re more likely to be hungry at that time of day.
  • Encourage your child to eat more at mealtimes by making sure you serve small amounts at snack times. Your child needs small regular healthy snacks for energy top-ups, but if there are too many snacks or they’re too big, they can be filled up before a main meal.

Healthy eating and food messages for your child

Healthy eating habits start at home. Giving your child healthy nutritious foods is important. It also helps to surround your child with messages about healthy eating habits and food. This can help your child make healthy food choices.

Here are some ideas:

  • Try to have a bowl full of fresh fruit within easy view and reach on the kitchen table or bench.
  • Stock your pantry and fridge with lots of healthy, nutritious options, and leave the sometimes food on the supermarket shelves.
  • Try to choose fruit and vegies of different colours, textures and tastes – the more variety there is, the more likely it is your child will find something that they are interested in eating.
  • Get your child involved in planning and preparing meals. If your child has helped to make the meal, they are more likely to eat it.
  • Enjoy healthy meals together as a family as often as possible. Also look for opportunities to eat together at breakfast and on weekends.
  • Turn the TV off while eating. This way your child is paying attention to eating and the fresh healthy food choices you offer.
  • Choosing and buying healthy food with children gives them a good foundation for making healthy food choices throughout life.
