3 Way Interviews
As mentioned in previous newsletters we are holding our 3 Way Interviews in Week 10. Information regarding availability and times to meet with your child’s individual teacher would have gone home this week. I encourage you all to make a time to attend the 3 Way Interviews.
Preparing to receive your child's semester one report card
Report cards will be emailed home on Wednesday of Week 11, each year it gets reported to me that some service providers see the report card mail as spam, causing the email with the report card to be delivered into people’s junk/spam folder rather than their inbox. Please add OneSchool.application@dete.qld.gov.au to your ‘safe senders list’ so your child’s Semester 1 report card will be delivered to your inbox at the end of the term.
If the email address on your enrolment form has changed, please let the office know by Friday 15th June. Changes received after this date may mean that your child’s report card is not delivered on time. Provisions will be made for those families who do not have access to the internet.
PREP Enrolments
If you have a child that is eligible for Prep in 2019 and have not yet enrolled please contact our office immediately to ensure a placement as our Prep classes are Filling Fast. Eligibility for Prep requires your child to be five years of age by 30 June in the year they intend to commence Prep. If you are aware of families that have Prep aged children for 2019, can you pass on this information to them. We do not want any families disappointed.
Safety of Students
I certainly appreciate that at times it can be difficult to organise drop off and pick up times for your children but it appears that we are getting more and more children arriving at school way too early in the morning and are being collected well after 3.30pm of an afternoon. We do have the YMCA before and after school service available to parents and for the safety and well-being of our students I encourage parents who are struggling to coordinate drop off and pick up times that align with the school’s policy to please utilise this service.
People Remaining on School Grounds
Please understand that our students are hard at work and engaged in learning from 8.50am so it is important that parents and carers who wish to continue to talk to their fellow community members please do so outside the school grounds as it can become distracting to the students and the teachers. I ask that the same process occurs in the afternoon as we are getting a number of families remaining in the school grounds while their children are playing on playgrounds and around the buildings. Once you have collected your child/ren can you please exit the school grounds as soon as possible. I really appreciate your support in this matter.
Dogs on School Property
Just a friendly reminder that dogs are not permitted at all on school property. If you do walk your dog to collect your student, they are to remain outside the school fences away from entrances and children and must be supervised at all times. Thank you in advance for your understanding and support in this matter.

THE ARTS NEWS
Firstly, I would like to thank all the students, parents, carers and teachers who donated items for our Year 6 ‘junk collage’ project. The finished product looks far from ‘junk’ like.
This has been a busy term!
Year 1 have continued on their ‘art basics’ journey and have had some fun with Fimo clay.
Year 2 have taken their knowledge of illustration methods and are using them to create E-Books, which will hopefully be on display on iPads for the Poetry Café later this term.
Year 3 have become design teams and have created some wonderful magazine covers using the conventions of magazine design.
Year 4 have been researching artists and are in the process of creating informative videos about them.
Year 5 are finishing up their portfolios we have been working on this Semester. These folios will be of use next year for any student who would like to apply for Art Excellence at high school in 2019 for the 2020 school year.
Year 6 have been working collaboratively on a weaving project, which they seem to have enjoyed. The finished product will hopefully be on display at the Poetry Café later this term.
Keep creating!

A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER
Cyber safety
In our digitally rich society it is important our children understand the risks associated with online environments and have strategies to web surf safely.
Cyber bullying, illegal or offensive content, online grooming, violence, gaming addiction, trolling, unwanted contact….the list of concerns is huge.
Trolling and cyberbullying are sometimes used to mean the same thing, but they're actually a little different. Cyberbullies target someone and repeatedly attack them, while trolls set out to annoy whoever they can. Trolls want to provoke a reaction or response and it’s often not a personal attack because they don’t really care who they upset.
How can I protect myself from trolls?
- Ignoring the troll. Don't respond to nasty, immature or offensive comments — giving trolls the attention they want only gives them more power.
- Blocking the troll. Take away their power by blocking them and if they pop up under a different name, block them again.
- Reporting trolls to website administrators and if they appear again under a different name, report them again.
What can I do to deal with cyberbullying?
- Watch for warning signs. Cyberbullying can be quite embarrassing and often our children are reluctant to talk about it when it happens: Dropping grades, avoiding going to school or social activities, lower self-esteem, stress-related health issues.
- Open the communication channels.
- Show empathy. At this stage, it is important to let your child know that you feel bad about the situation, but that it was not his/her fault.
- Generate ideas for your child to address the issue. It is important to work with your child to develop strategies that he/she can accept and implement.
- Block the bully. If the bully has been sending harassing text messages, block him or her from your child's phone list. Block the bully's access to your child's email or social networking pages. Children are notorious at sharing their passwords with friends, so change all of your child's passwords for email, social networking, instant messaging and more. Taking some of these precautions will help prevent further attacks.
What can I do to deal with content that’s offensive?
- close the page straight away, hit control-alt-delete if the site does not allow you to exit
- use a filter or other tool to block adult content, and use safe search settings in your browser
- report offensive content to the site administrator
- talk to someone you trust if you have seen something that has shocked or upset you.
Below is a site that contains some great resources to assist us to educate our children on safe internet practices.

A WORD FROM OUR CHAPLAIN
Many may not know about the Chaplaincy Service in our Queensland schools so over the next 4 weeks I will be explaining the role of a Chaplain.
I feel very privileged to serve as Chaplain at such an awesome school as MHSS. Please know that you can contact me anytime if you feel I can be of any support to you, your student and your families. My days at school are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Also, we will be scheduling some time to meet and discuss the Chaplaincy Service and how we can meet our community’s needs. If you are interested and would like more information please call on 55313919 or email me at rjour3@eq.edu.au
Football Camp
There is a Footy Camp being run for students in years 5 to 8 at the Gold Coast Sports & Recreation Centre, June 30-July 4th. There are flyers at the front office or you can email Troy and Tala at footycamp@sucamps.org.au
Being a Carer
YMCA – BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE
Good day to all our Musgrave Hill families, we are still continuing to inform everyone of changes to the Child Care Packages as they come in. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to come and see me and I will happily help where I can.
Our new flooring has been laid and looks fabulous. It has really lifted our room to make it look even more cosy and comfortable for our children to learn and play.
Finally we have our kiosk iPad’s going which makes the process a lot easier for parents to sign their children in and out. No more paper processes to sign or have to find missed signatures. This is all now in one system and very user friendly but children are not to sign in or out of these machines as they are still for parents only to sign.
We had our Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser over the weekend and it was a huge success! We will be able to purchase more educational and play equipment for our room and expand on our children’s interests and needs.
If you are new to the school or would like some further information on how to enrol your child into the service, please drop by, we are located in D Block and we would love to assist you.
Looking forward to seeing you soon!
