Newsletter Articles
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
This is the last newsletter for the term so by the time the next newsletter comes around the Gold Coast will get back to some normality after the Commonwealth Games. I am hoping for Australian dominance at these games and that the games will be remembered for all the right reasons and put the Gold Coast on the map as a destination that held one of the greatest Commonwealth Games events in recent history. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our community for all their support this term. It has been a very busy term but a very successful one.
Please note that school resumes on Tuesday 17th April due to the additional Student Free Day announced by the government.
Black Shoes and Uniform Policy
The new Uniform Policy was endorsed and approved by the P & C at our last meeting. Copies of the new policy will be available at the office after the holidays and will also be placed on our website.
Just a friendly reminder that as of week 1 Term 2 any child not wearing the correct black shoes will be asked to change their non-uniform shoes for a pair of school purchased black shoes. They will change back into their own shoes at the end of the day. Please see below what is acceptable and what is not.
Facebook Pages and Posts
Please be aware that Musgrave Hill State School does NOT have an official Facebook page nor do we have any other social media sites that we are affiliated with. Q Schools has been adopted by the school as our method of keeping parents informed. It is important to be aware that any unauthorised sites listing or naming the school name, names of students or staff, photos of students or staff is in breach of the information privacy principles under the Information Privacy Act. I understand that Facebook and other social media sites can be an effective communication tool but I ask that you respect the school’s stance and remove any posts or sites created using our school name or that mention our staff or students but most importantly please remove any photos. I thank you for your support in this matter.
Pick up and Drop Off Zone
I can certainly understand the frustration that can be caused by our drop off and pick up zones, but when people don’t follow the processes and procedures we have in place then this frustration escalates for those who do. Safety of our students is our highest priority so when parents double park, call their child across the road, park in areas that cause further congestion, we are putting our most precious gifts (our students) in harm’s way. I ask for patience and that we all please follow the guidelines set out in our Drop Off and Pick Up zones.
Safety Procedures
Each term the school practises a range of safety procedures these include Fire Drills, Lock Downs and Evacuation procedures. Most of these practises are unannounced beforehand so that the students can think about what they need to do to put their training into practice. We held a Lockdown this week and all students and staff responded quickly and appropriately. Well done to all involved.
Spell Off
This week we held the final of our Spell Off competition. It has been another great success. All results will be placed in the next addition of our newsletter.
Annual General Meeting for P & C
The P & C AGM was held last Wednesday 21st March. Tina Quirke who has been the President of our P & C for so long announced that she would hang up the boots and let someone else take over the reins. I personally want to thank Tina for the magnificent job she has done year after year ensuring that the students and community of Musgrave never missed out. She was a dedicated and committed President and she will be missed. Thanks again Tina for all you have done for our school, our students, our staff and the wider community.
So with that announcement comes the naming of our 2018 P & C Executive Team-:
President: Melissa
Holland
Vice-President: Ester Christie
Secretary: Renae Fyfe
Treasurer: Sally Grassick
I thank them all in advance for volunteering their time to be a part of our P & C.
A big shout out all the staff and students for their flexibility in adapting to the recent ‘wet weather’ meal breaks – the students showed great maturity in adapting to a full day in the classroom. The birds at school have been singing their delight with the changed weather conditions.
I wish everyone a relaxing and safe Easter break and I look forward to what Term 2 has to offer. See you on Tuesday 17th April.
Student achieving great things
Avie in Prep Silver spends her afternoons and weekends practicing the art of vaulting on a moving horse. We certainly do have amazing students here at Musgrave Hill.

Fun Run
We’re holding the CUA School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event this year! The event will be held on 27th April 2018. This is a sponsorship based fundraiser, and we’re looking to raise $10,000.00 for NEW PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT.
Keep your eyes peeled for the sponsorship forms which will be sent home with your child. Once you have the form, jump online in the link below and create a student profile page. Once you do this and raise at least $1 online, you will be entered into the $30,000 Ultimate Family Experience!
http://schoolfundraising.com.au
Students who raise $10 or more will receive a reward, and the more money you raise the better the reward, and the more you help the school!
The CUA School Fun-Run is a healthy fundraiser that we hope you’ll get behind. The event sends the right message to students about having fun while being healthy, all while helping the school raise funds.
We’re looking for all students to participate and we’re organising a great day for our community, so we’d love everyone to come down on the day.
If you have any questions about the Fun-Run please contact the Fun-Run Office on 1800 FUN RUN
Thanks for supporting the school and we hope to see you at the event!
Mother’s Day Stall
Don't forget to keep an eye out for our Mother's Day Stall it will be open on 9th May, 10th May and 11th May in the Hall. All gifts are $5 and under. All money raised for this event is going towards upgrading our playgrounds. So remember every little bit helps.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 2 VIOLET
In Literacy, 2 Violet have been busy looking at Procedures. After reading ‘Possum Magic’ by Mem Fox, we followed a procedure to make a vegemite sandwich. It was delicious!
We also followed a procedure to make an ice cream sundae. This time we used craft materials so we couldn’t eat it! It still looked amazing!
In Science, we have looked at materials and their properties. We read a great book called ‘What if rain boots were made of paper?’ It encouraged us to think about why objects are made from specific materials.

THE ARTS
It has been a very full term! Year one are getting their art basics down. Year two have investigated illustration methods and will apply this knowledge in Term 2. Year three have created symmetrical art works and are moving on to create magazine covers in Term 2. Year 4 are continuing with their ‘Impressionists’ unit. Year 5 are still busy building their art portfolios. And finally, Year six are keeping their art journals going and working collaboratively on their class art works.
Wednesday the 21st of March saw us experience ‘Harmony Day’ – a day on which we celebrate our wonderful multicultural society. I gained consent from a fellow artist, Steve “Squidoodle” Turner (UK), who has designed a hundred hearts in a colouring book, to copy it multiple times. Every student coloured a heart. Every teacher coloured one too – even Miss McGuinness. They were made into a 10+ metre temporary mural, which read “Kind Hearts Create HARMONY”.
I sent photos of our mural to Steve and he posted the following on Facebook. He was amazed!
Keep your eye out for our Flags of Inspiration for the Commonwealth Games. They will be flying along our front fence on Kumbari Avenue!
One last thing! There are some great art workshops at Robina Town Centre in the School holidays. Their ‘Detour Art Festival is on from 3rd – 14th pf April.
A WORD FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER
Keeping Our Kids Safe During School Holidays
With school holidays approaching, it’s a good time for parents to talk with their kids about personal safety. For parents or carers, keeping children safe is one of the most important things we can do. To do this, we must equip our children with the knowledge and skills they need to avoid risky situations. Just as we routinely teach children the road rules, we need to give them an understanding of their rights to protect themselves.
The basic principles we need to teach our children (remember: it’s never too early to sow the seeds of personal safety) are:
- To trust their feeling/instincts
- That they have the right to say ‘no’ if they feel unsafe or unsure
- That nothing is so yucky that they can’t tell someone about it
- That if they feel unsafe or unsure to run and tell someone they trust (and to keep telling until someone listens).
There are some basic rules that we need to teach our children to keep them safe when they are not at home or with their parents.
Rules for younger children might include:
- Know your name, address, phone number and your parents’ name
- Always check with your parents or person in charge before going anywhere – even going somewhere with someone you know.
- Always take a friend with you when you go somewhere
- Never go anywhere with someone you don’t know - run away if someone tries to get you to go with them
Rules for teens might include:
- Don’t go out alone – there is safety in numbers
- Always let an adult know where you are going
- Never go anywhere with someone you don’t know
- You can say ‘no’ if someone makes you feel uncomfortable or threatens or pressures you to do something you don’t want to.
Additionally, with many kids spending substantial periods of time online. Five quick tips you can teach your kids to safe online are:
- Private stuff needs protection (if you wouldn’t want you parents or grandparents to see something, don’t post it)
- You can only really know someone if you know them offline (think about what ‘a friend’ means to you)
- What you share will always be there (think before you post)
- Not everyone online is who they say they are (remember that behind the screen it is easy to pretend to be someone you are not)
- If something doesn’t feel right, tell a trusted adult (check out Bravehearts’ Join the Dots reporting app and website: bravehearts.org.au/join-the-dots)
