Newsletter Articles

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

As this is the last newsletter for the term, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for all your support and your resolute commitment to our school. Sustaining strong partnerships between home and school is vital to the success of any school and we are extremely fortunate to have very positive relationships with our school community. Our students have achieved so many amazing things this term and I congratulate them all on their phenomenal efforts. Also a big thank you to my teachers and staff who continually give above and beyond for our students to ensure they have the best learning opportunities available to them. As a Principal you cannot ask for a better school than this one and I am extremely fortunate and grateful to be here.

Filming of Students at School Events

Our school supports that parents will take footage of their children participating in school events for personal record. Parents need to be aware that some families and students have legitimate reasons for prohibiting their child’s image to be taken or published. Parents should be mindful that the publication of images, including by social media, requires the permission of all parties; students, parents, staff and other people who may appear in the images.

Tips for Discussing your Child’s Report Card

A report card is one way teachers communicate with parents and students. The report card is the teacher’s appraisal of the student’s work for the past semester. The following tips may be helpful to parents in discussing their child’s report card with them.

Meet privately with your child, without distractions. Be sure you have enough time.

Your child deserves your attention without interruptions. Be sure you allow enough time for a relaxed discussion.

Start with a review of what your child has learned in each subject.

Ask your child to tell you about the activity in each subject and what they have learned. Be positive and calm. Remember, a “C” rating in a subject area means your child is achieving at their year level standard.

Discuss with your child their goals for the next semester.

Are the goals reasonable and challenging?

Help your child plan his or her next steps.

Should you talk with the teacher to discuss concerns, ask for the teacher’s suggestions? Are changes needed in your child’s study habits at home? Is your child interested in learning more about certain topics?

Art Auction

What a truly wonderful evening our Art Auction night was. The turn out from the parents and the wider community was overwhelming. We also had many Administration Teams from other local schools showing their support for this event. The Principal of Coombabah High School was so taken by a number of different art pieces that he ended up having successful bids on two pieces. So if you ever visit Coombabah High you will see two amazing pieces of Art from the kids at Musgrave Hill hanging in their front office foyer.

A big thank you to all the people who participated in the Auction and I know the people who managed to score a fabulous piece of art will be showcasing their purchases with pride.

I do want acknowledge Kerrie Doolan and the Arts Committee for the extraordinary job they did organising this event. It was a very successful evening and one that showcased the many talents we have here on the Hill.

IPS Draft Constitution

As mentioned in the previous newsletter a draft constitution was distributed to all stakeholders for consultation and feedback. I thank those who provided feedback and the draft has been unanimously approved by all.

WHAT’S HAPPENING …

STEM CUP

A group of six students from MHSS were lucky enough to participate in a six week after school program through a Griffith University program called STEM Cup. We did multiple challenges that involved problem solving, building and maths. We had to work in 3 person teams, Hugh, Oscar and Hong Kai and Flynn, Damon and Andrew, which helped us build teamwork skills. We got to work on lots of different challenges including analysing handwriting in hand forensics, building a satellite, creating a floating container and much more!

There were bonus challenges, which gave us bonus points contributing to winning the competition. The more points you had the more likely you will get into the grand final.

The STEM Cup was an all around great experience. I would definitely recommend for you to give it a try in 2018.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 3 WHITE

3 White has been very busy writing and reading poetry. We have written different types of poems such as Acrostic, Haiku, Cinquain, Diamante and Bio Poems. It has been fun to create our poems and make art works to match them. We have enjoyed reading different poems and using the iPads to make our poems come to life. It is fun to record our voices while we read our poems with expression. Well done 3 White!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER

Building Self Esteem

Self esteem is feeling good about yourself, liking yourself, feeling that you are a worthwhile person. For almost all parents there are times when you worry about your child’s self esteem. Self esteem enables them to try new things without too much fear of failing, to reach out and make friends, and to manage problems they are likely to meet along the way. Good self esteem builds a solid foundation for life.

An important part of self esteem is feeling that you have a place in the world where you belong – that you are part of a family where you matter.

What parents can do to help build self esteem

  • Tell your child often that you love them and you are glad they are who they are
  • Show you love them by spending time, listening to their point of view, being willing to help them achieve their goals eg. Drive them to sport, watch the game
  • Support their learning – take an interest without taking over. Be involved in the school
  • Encourage friendships and make their friends welcome, and get to know them
  • Encourage hobbies or interests – a busy child is less likely to get into trouble
  • Let your child assist you with something eg. Cooking, fixing the video
  • Keep and cherish mementos of their success eg. Ribbons, trophies
  • Help them to solve their problems themselves by talking through the issue, offering ideas or alternatives and helping them follow through.

All children need love and support. You are the most influential person in their life. How you support your child and the skills you teach them will affect them for the rest of their life. Parenting is not easy but it can be a most rewarding job when you see that the child you have reared is a happy, capable and caring person.
