FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

The Term is certainly flying by quickly and it continues to amaze me how much our teachers and students can achieve in that time so a big thank you to them all for their hard work and persistence.

Meet and Greet

Just a friendly reminder about the school’s before school procedures. Upon arrival at school all children are to go to the covered area outside the hall where they are supervised by staff. When the first bell goes all students whether they are with their parents or not are to go to the covered area for our morning “Meet and Greet”. I ask that parents please assist us by ensuring your child is in attendance outside the hall and not sitting with you in another area of the school. I thank you in advance for your support in this matter.

Art Auction

Reminding everyone about our amazing Art Auction night which will be held on Thursday 15th June from 5:30pm – 7pm.

This auction will showcase several art pieces that have been undertaken this year by each class throughout the school with our own Arts teacher/artist Ms Kerrie Doolan. We are extremely proud of the high quality of work that has been produced and very much look forward to sharing this with our school and local community. Funds raised from this event will go back into resourcing for the school’s Arts program.

It would be great to see as many people here as possible to support the wonderful work our students have done. Tickets are available at the School Office.

IPS School Council

As part of becoming an IPS school, the establishment of a School Council is a priority within the first 12 months. In order for this to commence all stakeholders need to agree to the constitution of this School Council. The Principal is required to write a draft constitution and then consult with Staff, Students and Parents. I have attached a link where you can access and read our draft constitution and any feedback can be given to our P & C members. We will be voting on the draft constitution at the next P & C meeting so I encourage you to attend to have your vote. Below is what a draft constitution requires.

A draft constitution must:

  • provide for a membership that—
        - allow adequate representation by parents, staff, students and other members of the school community; and
        - take into account the demographics of the school community;
  • provide for the school council to perform its functions in an effective and fair way;
  • be adequate, clear and appropriate; and
  • be consistent with the Act and otherwise lawful.

Report Cards-: ‘C’ is something to celebrate!

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, report cards will be emailed home to parents on Wednesday of week 10. I put this information in the newsletter every year around report card time because I believe it is important to share the follow information with you to eliminate any confusion there may be surrounding the allocation of achievement. I encourage parents to pay particular attention to the effort grades for each subject and support their children to continually try their hardest at school.

The level of achievement your child receives in each area of their report is determined by how well they have achieved the required national standard, not on how well they have achieved compared to others in their class.

Mums and Dads/Carers sometimes feel disappointed if their child has one or more ‘C’s on their report card. This can be because they understand a ‘C’ to mean ‘average’. However, a ‘C’ does not mean average. A ‘C’ is something to celebrate!

Achieving a ‘C’ means that a student has achieved the required standard for their year level as outlined in the Australian Curriculum. In general, it means that students can remember and understand learning considered essential for their age. Students who achieve A’s and B’s are usually required to demonstrate some kind of ‘higher order thinking, like applying learning to design a solution to a challenging problem. Getting 100/100 on a test does not guarantee an ‘A’, unless the test includes questions that requires the more advanced thinking associated with an ‘A’ standard in the Australian Curriculum.

Of course, it is FANTASTIC when a student achieves an A or a B, and ALL of our children are encouraged to strive for excellence. That said, you can feel justly proud if your child achieves a ‘C’ and should let them know that they have performed well.

Students receive a ‘D’ when they require support and have not yet achieved the standard for their year level, however, are working towards it and continue to learn and develop. Students who receive an ‘E’ are experiencing difficulty and require significant intervention and support. Whatever rating your child receives, the effort rating and the teacher’s comments will tell you how hard they are trying and describe the progress being made.

One of our School values is Excellence and we encourage all students to strive to achieve their potential. For some students, regardless of their level of achievement, their rating is a result of them applying themselves and working extremely hard. When this is the case, these students should feel proud of their efforts and be congratulated.

We trust that you will find the information in your child’s report card informative. We welcome parents to discuss any aspect of the report card with the relevant teacher or administration.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – PREP ORANGE

Wow! What a busy term we've had! The students in Prep Orange enjoyed a lovely Mother's Day afternoon on Wednesday 10th May. They pampered their Mothers with hand massages and cooling cucumber patches. They made bracelets with pretty beads and completed colouring activities. After all this the Mum’s enjoyed cups of tea and coffee on the grassy area outside Prep Yellow.

Under 8’s Day was Wednesday 24th May. It really was a great day and the children in Prep Orange had an awesome time!

We are currently preparing for the Poetry Café morning in week 10. The Prep students are getting excited and so we hope to see as many parents as possible to share in their excitement.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER

Pestering and what to do about it!

When your children keep asking for things they can’t have – and don’t take ‘no’ for an answer – that’s pestering. If it works, that’s pester power. It can be hard to handle. It helps to understand why children pester and how to respond.

Why children pester

To your child, the world is full of interesting things. In shopping centres, they’re often at your child’s eye level. Children are also easily influenced by clever marketing of children’s products – for example, toys and unhealthy food. And it can be hard for children to understand that some pretty, shiny or yummy things aren’t good for them or cost too much.

All of this can lead to pestering – ‘Can I have a lolly?’ ‘I want a toy!’ ‘Please, please, please!’

Pestering can wear you down. It can even put you in embarrassing situations – for example, ‘Why don’t we have enough money to buy that toy?’ It can be hard to say no when you know that giving in will bring your child instant pleasure – or bring you instant relief from repeated requests, whingeing or temper tantrums.

But if you give in, your child learns that pestering works. And this means he’ll keep pestering.

Reducing pestering

You can take steps to make pestering less likely to happen in the first place:

  • Lay down some ground rules before you go shopping. Talk with your child about what behaviour you expect and how you’ll respond to any pestering.
  • Praise your child for good shopping behaviour. Give her lots of positive attention so she knows you’ve noticed she’s not pestering. For example, ‘I’m really proud of how you helped me shop and didn’t ask for things we can’t get’.
  • Offer healthy rewards for good shopping behaviour. For example, ‘If you can get through this shopping trip without asking for stuff, we’ll stop at the park on the way home’.

Handling pestering

If your child pesters or tries to get you to buy things by whining, demanding or threatening, you could try the following:

  • Let your child know you won’t consider the request until she uses her manners. For example, you could say, ‘Dani, stop whining. Use your nice voice’.
  • Don’t say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ until you’re happy with the way you’ve been asked.
  • When you say ‘no’, stick to it. Giving in to pestering can train children to do it more. ‘No’ means ‘no’, not ‘maybe’, so don’t say it unless you mean it. If you say ‘no’ and then give in, your child gets the message that pestering and whining can work.
  • After saying ‘no’, try to distract your child with something else. For example, ‘We need oranges. Can you help me find them?’

Staying calm when children pester

Pestering can be frustrating and annoying. If you feel that pestering is getting the better of you, this exercise might help:

  • Stop.
  • Count to 10.
  • Now respond to your child.

That extra 10 seconds is often enough to calm you down.

Pestering can be particularly stressful when your child has a tantrum in a public place. Don’t be tempted to give in because there are strangers watching. Stay calm and forget your audience – it’s likely that most will be watching with sympathy, and that they’ve probably been through it too!
