FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Chaplain Week

Last week we celebrated the amazing job Chaplains do in our schools. SU QLD chaplains, or 'Chappies', provide a variety of support to the school communities. They are in the prevention and support business: helping students find a better way to deal with a range of issues. They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for kids in crisis, and those who just need a friend. They also provide support for staff and parents in school communities.

We are ever so fortunate to have Rusty as our Chaplain. She does an amazing job and we are truly blessed to have someone so passionate and committed to our school. Rusty we celebrate with you and thank you for the tireless work you do for all members of our community.

Semester One Report Cards

As in previous years your child/ren’s Semester 1 Report Cards will be emailed home on Wednesday of Week 10 (21st June). It has been reported to me that a number of service providers see the report card mail as spam, causing the email with the report card to be delivered into the junk/spam folder rather than their inbox. Please add OneSchool.application@dete.qld.gov.au to your ‘safe senders list’ so your child’s Semester 1 report card will be delivered to your inbox at the end of the term.

If the email address on your enrolment form has changed, please let the office know by Friday 9th June. Changes received after this date may mean that your child’s report card is not delivered on time. Provisions will be made for those families who do not have access to the internet.

NAPLAN

A big thank to all involved in preparing our students for NAPLAN. The children all did the very best they could and I could not be prouder of their commitment and effort. Thank you to the Tuckshop Ladies and all the staff who assisted in preparing and serving a very nutritious breakfast for all our Year 3 and 5 students.

Uniform Survey

Thank you to the many families who have already returned your surveys. Can I encourage those who have not to please do so within the next week? Once the information has been collated I will be sure to inform the community.

Dogs on School grounds

As most of the community is aware, I am very much an animal lover and dogs are my absolute favourite. Unfortunately not everyone has had positive experiences with dogs, therefore creating a genuine uncertainty and fear within some of our children and community members. With this in mind I ask that all dogs please remain outside the school gates, on a leash and accompanied at all times. I appreciate your support in this matter.

Amazing Student Achievement

Alayah and Pace S both received medals at a National Karate Tournament in March. They have been chosen to represent Australia in the World championships later this year. What an outstanding effort and achievement. We are extremely proud of them both and wish them the best of luck for the World Champs.

Parents Outside Classrooms

Can I please ask that if you are collecting your child from their classrooms after school that you do not congregate on the verandas directly outside the classrooms as it can be very distracting for the students that are working inside. I appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

CLASSROOM CAPERS – 3 NAVY

Can you believe we are already halfway through term 2?

3 Navy certainly cannot!

This year has been a busy one and has flown by so quickly. All of Year 3 is to be congratulated on their persistence and perseverance throughout NAPLAN. The students have showed resilience, courage and hard work leading up to and throughout the testing period. In class, 3 Navy have been ‘Measuring Masters’ using metric units to measure length around the school grounds. Students used a range of measuring tools including trundle wheels, metre rulers and measuring tapes and had lots of fun learning outdoors. 3 Navy have also been exploring fun ways to learn our multiplication facts through songs and games such as Around the World and Buzz Off. Who knew learning could be so fun??

A MESSAGE FROM OUR GUIDANCE OFFICER

Helping kids become resilient

Definition: ‘Resilience – the ability to cope in times of stress or hardship.’

As parents we work to equip our children with the tools they need to solve their own problems, to respond to difficulties, to feel good about themselves and others, and to perceive the future in a hopeful and confident manner.

It would be great if all children arrived with a Do it Yourself Manual but here are some ideas to help your child become resilient.

Brooks and Goldstein talks of 10 key principles for resilience

  • Be empathetic – teach understanding of how another person might feel, recognize your own feelings
  • Communicate and listen effectively – and respond to what your child is saying
  • Love your children in ways that make them feel special and appreciated – let them know you love them unconditionally.
  • Accept your child for who they are and help them to set reasonable goals – goals for today, and goals for the future. It’s good to work towards something.
  • Help them experience success in whatever they show competence in (even if it’s collecting bugs)
  • Focus on positives, reword negative talk – sometimes the positive may be hard to see, but it’s there. Always end a conversation with something positive. Instead of saying `don’t ….’, say ‘what you want your child to do’.
  • Help them to understand that `mistakes’ are just things yet to be learnt
  • Develop responsibility, compassion and social awareness by providing opportunities where you child can contribute or give back to others.
  • Teach your child to solve problems and make decisions (What’s the problem?, What are the choices? Which is the best choice? Try it. If it doesn’t work review your choices.)
  • Discipline in a way that promotes self- discipline and self worth. Punishment is one form of discipline and often a least effective form as it teaches the child what not to do rather than what to do, and can often build resentment. It is difficult to teach your child a better way to behave when you yourself are angry and upset. So be calm, tell your child what you want them to do, and praise your child for doing the right thing. Have a plan in place for dealing with noncompliance. But be calm. Your child is watching you and will copy how you behave.

In following these principles we will contribute to helping our children be resilient, to be emotionally healthy, equipped to successfully confront challenges, and bounce back from setbacks.
